Google Ply Gift Card - scam?

I had an email apparently from an acquaintance last week asking for a favour. Of course, I said "What is it"
He replied "I need Google gift cards for an impoverished family member, but |I can't get to the shops as they are too far. Can you call in a store like Tesco or Sainsburys and get me three gift cards at £100 each, and send me the code? I'll refund you on |Friday"

Naturally I deleted it right away. The person in question lives in a town in Yorkshire - bags of shops nearby, surely. I assume someone had got into his address book and emailed everyone on it?

Anyone else come across this?

I had one supposedly sent by my brother and he didnt send it , not this particular one but similar , email seems to get hacked far too often

Famous scam featured on Radio 4 a couple of weeks ago.
Usually it’s youngsters in a new job getting an email from the boss asking them to do it.
They comply and it’s bye bye £500.

A shop assistant at Bredbury Morrisons wouldn't sell aged chap £100s of Amazon cards a few week ago because she realized he was probably being scammed. I think they ensured he was ok and informed the police too. Bravo to Morries Bredbury.
