Gout

I seem to recall when I had it they put me on colchicine. Did the trick though.

Short term respite only, the side effects can be grim including alopecia I know of a fellow sufferer who’s GP was lax in dishing it out when he should have prescribed allopurinol and he’s now more fucked off with his hair than the gout which is now in control due to the latter drug.

Appreciate the feedback, mine was only a short term fix as you point out.

Pleasure to be educated on a topic I only have a small understanding of.

Thanks for sharing.

It’s horrific, I take allopurinol every day and luckily I haven’t had a flare up for a few years. Usually affects my big toe but before I knew i had gout I spent a night in hospital with an unbearable pain in my knee
Same here I’m on allopurinol but when I feel a flare up coming on I take naproxen which usually clams it down in a day or two

Just started last night with that all to familiar feeling in my ankle, I take allopurinol daily so attacks for me have been reduced to once a year, I have a course of Colchicine on standby as this is supposed to reduce the severity and length of the attack, it has not peaked pain wise yet so it will be a good test for me to see if this works to take the edge off, my worst attack was 2 years ago and I couldn't walk without crutches for a month!!

been taling allopurinol for a few years now and it has worked very well, I had an attack a couple of weeks ago and managed to head it off with Colchicine to prevent a full blown attack.

Wow, you must get gout bad then pal. I have a strip of Naproxen at the ready just in case, but drinking enough water helps keep it at bay.

Thankfully I got some Naproxen when the Doc gave me Allopurinol so I've started on those too.

Im pretty sure mine is entirely hereditary. My Dad is on some medication for it I cant recall the name of ( he takes it as it starts up rather than all the time ) and my Brother is on Allopurinol too.

Good to read the posts of fellow sufferers on here and the advice given . I’ve had this the last two weeks in my big toe and I’ve also tested positive for COVID this week. To be honest the Gout has so far been worse than the COVID. I’m over weight but don’t drink excessively- typically one beer a day but my diet isn’t great,

Ive bought some colchicine on line as that has helped in the past but after a couple of days I’ve not noticed an improvement. I might try calling the GP in the week to see if anything else would work.

Can you get up for work on those heavy duty pain killing meds though?

cheers blue - do you have allopurinol on repeat prescription or do you only take it when you have a flare up?

repeat prescription
they give me 3 months supply so i dont have to pay the prescrpion charge every month
originally they put me on 100mg but i was still getting a few milder attacks, they upped it to 200mg per day
and its so far worked,i confess,i drink heavily and always have done, probably what brought it on originally, although my dad and his mum ,my gran both suffered from gout too,so maybe a bit hereditry and alcohol

To be fair mate I gave up drinking completely last year (apart from one champions league final related wobble) and my gout hasn't improved at all. I'm still taking allopurinol, if I stop taking it, the gout comes back.
So for me at least, it's not drink related.
