Greater Manchester Politics Thread

Is he because every days delay in locking down means people will die so who is he representing here? Lockdown has been demanded by many and now its here they dont want it seems to be the case or at least they will have it once they have negotiated a bit.

Politics is being played by everyone.
I wonder what the cost of a life is?

Not surprised GM are aggrieved if reports are true that we’ve been offered £22m for a population of 2.8m (about £8 a head), compared to £42m and £44m respectively for Lancashire and Merseyside (both with populations of 1.5m). Seems disproportionate. Hopefully they can find a resolution to this mess before the government’s midday deadline.

Can't help but feel Burnham has overplayed his hand here. He should have accepted the lockdown as per Labour policy and then very vocally campaigned for the financial.package. It was always a war he was never going to win and if we sadly see a huge rise in deaths in the coming weeks, fingers will be pointed at the man who refused the lockdown for over a week.

I think you're conflating Tier 3 restrictions and "lockdown" here. They're not the same thing. Even the government's own scientific advisors seem highly sceptical that Tier 3 will have a significant impact. On that basis, it's understandable that Greater Manchester doesn't just accept the restrictions being imposed on the region without seeking adequate compensation first for those who will be most affected.

I'm conflating nothing and for what it's worth, I'm against tiers/lockdowns or whatever they get called next as they do nothing in the long-term and in the short term reap misery on the majority.

That said his own party have called for a lockdown. Scientists/SAGE have called for it. Doctors in the region have and for a week he has played politics. Many on here have called for them and bemoaned a lack of action from the Government yet suddenly they have backed Burnham refusing and I don't quite get that stance? Who will they blame in 4 weeks time when the death rates undoubtedly rise?

He looked rather uncomfortable in the news this morning and even said he will be judged over this himself.

You can’t impose lockdown/restrictions with its consequent economic impact unless you provide the funds to compensate for the economic impact.

Its not complicated.
Especially when the government's own scientific advisors have said they don't expect the lockdown/restrictions to have any significant impact on any spreading of the virus. There's got to be a legal case here, but how many businesses will survive to be around to see any possible benefits if that was to happen? This whole thing is a piss take by a government who is now ruling by decree.

You can, we have some as has every other country and our financial response stands up against anyone's. By all means argue for more, I'd agree we need to do more and I'd go full on UBI right now but it now feels like many are putting the finance before the health which they have always demanded we not do.

Amazing how things can change eh?

Our financial response has been okay so far, but we also have one of the lowest statutory sick pay rates in Europe and France and Germany have made moves to continue financial support measures well into next year. Our safety net overall is lower than a country like Sweden. I agree on UBI.

The health of the economy is dependent on the health of its citizens so I take the view it’s not choice between the two, but a co-dependency. You also have to take the public with you, leaders/public figures wearing masks, ‘everyone doing their bit’, trusting in local/regional leadership to know the situation on the ground and giving them the necessary resources, reacting quickly if they get it wrong. This is an unknown situation with unknown variables so mistakes, miscalculations will happen.

Right now the situation is being increasingly seen as ‘rule by diktat’. Central Govt not listening and increasing confrontations with regions, devolved Govts, a sense that the situation is out of control and there is no end in sight.

Lockdowns/circuit breakers are not magic bullets that solve the problem, there are no magic bullets, just lots of things from masks and social distancing to temporary lockdowns that mitigate and suppress the virus but none of them will solve the problem. There is no actual solution without an effective vaccine so we have to adapt to a ‘new normal’ and that includes working with, and listening to, local and regional Govt and providing the funding they will need.

Starmer threw GM's economy under the bus by backing a nationwide lockdown in the midst of these negotiations. Not a helpful intervention and allows Johnson to pursue his regional lockdown agenda with very little opposition except from a minority in his own party and from regional mayors.

I don't think changing to tier 3 will impact figures anyway.

The rise in cases was clearly linked to schools re-opening and students heading to their new towns/cities for university.

Deaths are still well down on April figures. Cases have risen, but that's simply because the testing system in place in April was utterly shambolic. Cases are actually decreasing in GM, so it seems like our second wave has peaked.

If anything tier 3 could increase cases as people will start to congregate in each other's homes.

I back Andy. Fuck the Tories. Fuck every single one of them, using our city as some sort of social/economic experiment and leaving our people in poverty.

That twat Jenrick sanctioned £25 million to his own constituency of Newark @ £275.00p per constituent.
Manchester would get £22 million @ £7.85p per constituent.

The fucking bent ****.

Starmer is beginning to really get on my tits

Sunak proving the Manchester MPs point in the commons. He's just refused to answer a question from a passionate member and accused the MP of "Having a bad tone that isn't constructive."

You are not supposed to ask tough questions to the government. Any questioning of them means you aren’t towing the line.

Reactions: mat
Most Tory MPs don't give a fuck about the North West, they are in it for themselves and this has become self-evident in the last 6 months with the procurement contracts being divvied out to their mates.
I personally would like to see them all thrown in prison for the crimes they've committed during this pandemic but we all know that wont happen.

It seems that one side or other will look at all the harm done to either the economy and all the dead bodies and perhaps both and punch the air proclaiming 'see we was right'.

No wonder young people ignore politicians and go on nightly missions to spread the virus.
