Greatest Guitarist

Dont forget Toad o' Line. Seem to remember before they were well known that Steve Vai and Joe Bonamassa played on Zappa albums in the 80s.

Jimi Hendrix, Michael Schenker, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Gary Moore and Brian May. Ah feel like I'm 15 again remembering that lot.

Robert Johnson, king of the delta blues. He influenced a lot of sixties guitarists. When Keith Richards first heard him he asked "who's the other guitarist?" There wasn't one, that's how good he was. Oh, and according to legend, he sold his soul to the devil, how cool can you get?

I'm glad somebody revived this zombie thread although I think the concept of there being one single 'Greatest Guitarist' is ridiculous. However it does give me a chance to post this video to an appreciative audience (possibly).

Surely no one can dispute Hendrix being the greatest, but my favourite is Frusciante.

Love these threads and seeing every ones views. Most of the ones I would have gone for have already been done, but a few others from different styles would be
Chett Atkins
B B King
George Benson
Al Di meola
John Williams
To Quiet riot you're selection of Mike McCready did not surprise me, loved the vid ;-)
To Bob get a copy of School Days and listern to the master bass man Stanley Clarke. ( or project 2 with George Duke ) and for the record I have no probs with Mark King

It's obligatory to give Hendrix the greatest rock guitarist of all time award and justified although there's a lot of guitarists around with amazing technique but fast and tricky does not simply make for great music. Hendrix made some fantastic music and broke new ground and had an incredible style for his time but he's not my favourite guitarist.

It would be easy to list a hundred fabulous guitarists, many of whom have already been mentioned; my own top twenty (first five in order) would be:

Blackmore
Van Halen
Page
Jeff Beck
Joe Satriani
Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser
Randy Rhoads
Joe Walsh
Alex Lifeson
Pete Townshend
Rory Gallagher
Tony Iommi
Tommy Bolin
Neil Young
Brian May
Billy Gibbons
Mike Campbell
Slash
Hendrix
Keith Richards

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Jose Feliciano yet. An incredible talent and blind from birth...
