There's a Mexican film Amores Perros that is very gritty. It connects three different story strands through a car crash. The first is about violent criminals involved in dog-fighting.

Good choice.

Das experiment. German film. First study of a big brother experiment that went wrong. I cant be sure but i think it was based on a true story. And a belgian film called The Ordeal. Just 2 of the top of my head. I'll try and remember some more.
