Just out of curiosity Leighton, how many seasons did you feel yaya had left in him at the end of 13/14?? Silva is declining, if people want to admit that or not is a different story... He's still a brilliant player but we've seen the frustration with him this season, he will be phased out over the next couple of years and head home!!
There's a big difference between the two.
Yaya is 6'3 about 15 stone and a big part of his game is physicality. Age has caught up with him and his physical decline has been alarming over the last couple of years.
He's not got the explosive burst of pace that he used to have which has seen his performance drop. But the bigger issue is his stamina. He's like a heavyweight boxer, stamina was never his strong point, but he could get away with it with bursts of power and pace. But now he's not got the stamina to last all game and he's not got the burst of pace either, so physically he's shot at the top level.
Silva is completely different. He's 5'7 and about 10 stone. He's never relied on phsicality. His pace or endurance is no different to what it was 3 years ago. He relies on intelligence, technique and movement. He still has all of those attributes.
He's been playing through injury for most of the season. He's walking on to the pitch in pain and you can see it in him every time he gets fouled that he's in pain with his ankle. If Nasri, Sterling and De Bruyne hadn't been injured so much he wouldn't have been playing. He's put himself through the pain barrier with injections for the good of the team.
Yaya's was a gradual physical decline. Silva's wasn't. The first 5 games of the season before injury Silva was in the best form of his career. West Brom away is the best he's ever played for us. He was getting talked about as a shoe-in for player of the season. There was no talk of a physical decline at that point.
His drop off in performance were as a direct result of the ankle injury. You could see it as early as his first game back. He came off the bench for the last 10 minutes and kept giving it away. He wasn't moving freely and wasn't himself at all. Nothing to do with pace, power or endurance, and all to do with being injured and playing through pain.
Terminal physical decline and injury are two different things. Yaya is the former, Silva the latter. If he can stay injury free he's got many years left at the top level. His hero Valleron has just retired at 40. They are similar players, if Silva can shake off this long standing ankle issue there's no reason why he couldn't play at the top level until a similar age.
