Gym Bunnies

Being a fat, horrible bastard, I've decided the time has come (again for about the 10th time in my life!) to do summat about it. I've cut down on the food, been swimming 3 or 4 times a week and I've even cut down on the booze - so much so I have voicemails from the makers of Strongbow demanding to know what the fuck is going on and do I know the damage I am doing to their share price.

I've joined the gym up here and went for the first time last night. Absolutely fucking knackered! I know cardio(?) is the best thing to do for fat burning so been on the bike, the rower, the cross trainer thing-a-me-jig etc but being hideously impatient...

Which exercise/exercise machine will burn fat the quickest?

Sorry if that is an obvious thing, but I'm 16st, stupid and a tad desperate.

You also need to do strength work as well, if you are looking at all round fitness, if they do it at your gym ask them for a fitness programme tailored around your needs

Running.

Quite simply, nothing will shift fat quicker than running a lot. It burns something like 600-900 calories an hour depending on the pace.

Personally i'd disagree with running being the best, i'm sure there's studies showning that its not great for men in particularly.

Although, for me, cardio is cardio, you're doing it to get your heart rate up, burn calories and increase your metabolism. I prefer the bike; sit down cardio ;) or the rower bit more of an all over body workout.

Duc is right though, if you want to drop the pounds, diet and resistance training is a priority too.

I think they say eat 350 cal under your maintenance a day, and you should be looking at losing 1lb per week. Much more is probably unhealthy and you're losing more than just fat.

Although there's people far more knowledgable than me on here who will be able to offer sound advice.

I'd go for a combination of rowing and the crosstrainer.

Your body will be accustomed to one form of equipment, so mix it up for best results.

The advantage the crosstrainer has over running is it's low impact. Running will eventually fuck your knees, especially if you're a tad overweight

The rowing machine is a brilliant all round exercise, which does cardio, your shoulders, back, arms, legs and your arse. Hold your stomach in when you use it

Cut down on your booze, just a few at the weekend, and keep exercising. Nothing much will happen for a couple of months and then all of a sudden you'll start dropping weight

But swimming will tone you up more- is that correct?

Also I was told that the best way to burn fat when running is rather than doing 30mins at medium pace is to do a 10 minute session where you do 1min flat out then 1 min at resting pace and repeat- is this also correct?

Rowing machine (if done properly which it usually isn't) would be the best bet.

I like to do at least an hours rowing a day.
Sometimes more.
Then Mrs Fetlocks usually fucks off to the shops in a hissy fit and buys some shoes she doesn't need, and I settle down with a chip butty,a cold beer, and At The Races on the telly.
And I can lose fucking pounds on a bad afternoon.

There is no such thing as 'tone' ;)

I think what you're describing is High intensity interval training (HIIT)

It is a great fat burner, but rather than set times, i think its best to base it on your heart rate.

I.e jog for 5 mins with a H/R of say 100, all out sprint for 20 sesonds H/R goes up to 135, back to jog until your heart rate drops back to 100 then go flat out for your set time again.

The progression comes from being able to fit more 'flat out' periods into your 20 minute workout as the weeks progress.

Try doing that when you're unfit and overweight. HiT training is really for toning up
