Gym Bunnies

Thanks all. I must admit, I've lost most pounds through the At The Races method, but Mrs Bow is somewhat averse to this.

Will ramp up the rower and thr cross trainer. Love my swimming too.

All great advice, so thanks very much!

Running.

Quite simply, nothing will shift fat quicker than running a lot. It burns something like 600-900 calories an hour depending on the pace.

But swimming will tone you up more- is that correct?

Also I was told that the best way to burn fat when running is rather than doing 30mins at medium pace is to do a 10 minute session where you do 1min flat out then 1 min at resting pace and repeat- is this also correct?

Try doing that when you're unfit and overweight. HiT training is really for toning up

Whats HiT training mate? Trying to shift a few pounds myself at the mo!

HiT training, or HiiT training, is what you've described, the jog/walk then sprint.
Another tip for losing weight and toning up is don't eat margarine or similar spreads

According to the monitor thingy on the Cross Trainer, my heart rate went up to 172 - frightened the life out of me. I've checked it now (sat down, calm etc) and it is 64 so I know it's not broken.

Just that post about running at 100 then sprinting to get up to 135 - don't think my body works like that just yet!

hiit can also be done with bodyweight exercises as circuits burpees/ mountain/ climbers/ jumping jacks/ press ups/ bodyweight squats

I reckon my heart rate goes higher than 172 opening a bank statement mate.
I read an article once about the dangers of drinking to excess and not taking exercise, and it scared me shitless.
I realised I had to do something about it.
So I did.
I gave up reading articles.

There is the "zone" that you're supposed to stay in for optimum weight loss
If you're heart rate goes too high, you're gaining fitness but not really losing weight, which is why walking for an hour a day is recommended, low impact and raises the heartbeat
Don't go hell for leather, just a 40 minute period of sustained cardio exercise at a pace that doesn't get your heart rate over 130

Maximum safe training heart rate is generally 220 minus your age mate.
