According to the monitor thingy on the Cross Trainer, my heart rate went up to 172 - frightened the life out of me. I've checked it now (sat down, calm etc) and it is 64 so I know it's not broken.

Just that post about running at 100 then sprinting to get up to 135 - don't think my body works like that just yet!
Maximum safe training heart rate is generally 220 minus your age mate.
Phew; I sneak under then with 6 bpm to spare (I'm 42).

Good man. When I used to row I frequently went well above 215 (I was 14-21) and managed it with a heart murmur. So I wouldn't worry too much, my advice would be to build up slowly though and don't look to go over the recommended unless you become super fit.

I find throwing a £200 a week cocaine habit in to the mix helps you drop weight quite quickly

Dire poverty is an alternative to this. Go out immediately and spunk every thing you've got on the outsider in the first race; borrow a further few grand to ensure indebtedness. If it wins you can employ someone like that bird off the Eric Prydz video to help you shed the pounds with some horizontal jogging interspersed with tongue exercising.
If it loses you will resemble Posh Spice in about 6 weeks. Win win, really

I was just plucking figures mate, everyone's H/R is different depending on age, fitness etc

No worries mate.

Home for the weekend so will do some more swimming over the weekend, then back in the gym when I get back up here on Monday.

Actually looking forward to it.

Which exercise/exercise machine will burn fat the quickest?

Running.

Quite simply, nothing will shift fat quicker than running a lot. It burns something like 600-900 calories an hour depending on the pace.

There you go - running. just go for a two hour run around the park and there goes 1800 calories. Bingo!

Being a fat, horrible bastard, I've decided the time has come (again for about the 10th time in my life!) to do summat about it. I've cut down on the food, been swimming 3 or 4 times a week and I've even cut down on the booze - so much so I have voicemails from the makers of Strongbow demanding to know what the fuck is going on and do I know the damage I am doing to their share price.

I've joined the gym up here and went for the first time last night. Absolutely fucking knackered! I know cardio(?) is the best thing to do for fat burning so been on the bike, the rower, the cross trainer thing-a-me-jig etc but being hideously impatient...

Sorry if that is an obvious thing, but I'm 16st, stupid and a tad desperate.

Exercise alone won't work, make sure you check your calorie intake 2500 for man on a daily basis, but you should try and aim for under 2000.
