Haaland’s penalties…be careful what you wish for!

Always low corner please, like a crisp pass.

And there's a physical reason:

a ball NOT on the ground is closer to the keeper's hands, and saving with his hands is a reflex, which per definition is much much quicker (ask your own nervous system for details...)
than diving to the ground against the inertia of your body mass.
you would be correct under normal circumstances but almost all Haalands pens are low and the keeper knows this in advance. watch it back and see how their keeper gets low and dives low - before it is struck he is “diving low”. if Haaland had lifted it then it would have gone in. the problem is most people know it is going low to left or right so that’s where the keeper goes. More variety is needed. right now the keeper guesses right he is likely to save it

I think the speed he runs in at, coupled with having a very angular frame and leaning heavily to the right, mitigates against any kind of shot down the middle, never mind one requiring as much delicacy and precision as a panenka.
I’m afraid Haaland’s poorish record from the spot is just a reflection of the fact that he hits everything either bottom left or bottom right and if the keeper goes the right way he’s got a 50/50 chance of saving it. Compare and contrast with Goofy at the Swamp, or Cole Palmer, or, in days gone by, Balotelli, who not only had 3 options instead of 2, but could throw in a pause to get the keeper to commit before then trundling it into the opposite corner.
Either way, he needs relieving of the responsibility

So the way he runs means he can hit it to the left and hit it to the right, but he can't hit it down the middle?

Come on.

He missed two penalties for Norway against Israel during the previous international break.

As I said after the Everton game, he needs to vary his shots when he's one-on-one with the goalkeeper and when taking penalties.

He's 25 years old; he's still going to improve in many areas.

Given that he hasn't - to the best of my memory - taken a single penalty down the middle for City, clearly he has some kind of issue with doing so. You got a better explanation? I would suggest that he feels most comfortable opening his body out wide and placing it to the keeper's right, but in doing so he telegraphs it

I'm guessing (like you), that he mostly thinks if he puts it in a corner it isn't being saved, whereas the middle is riskier. But doing the same thing all the time eventually ends up with the 'safe option' becoming the riskier one and keepers are reaching even well placed shots.

Just a guess though and you're right about him telegraphing it now.

The fancy run ups really irritate me.
Goofy at the swamp does my head in.another reason to hate all things utd.

Got me on one now. Goofy fucks me off because he often falls theatrically if touched in the box
Then pisses me off even more by fancy runs when taking the pen.
Utd away at Villa Park years back is one example of this double fakeness which I'd like to see less of in Football.
Rant over ; )

Right it's been two days open and this thread hasn't got any comments about Gary Owens penalty taking in the late 70s for City.
Did he miss any ? If not then he is up there with Mario and Yaya as a 100% er
Any body got anything to say about Gary Owen,or is thread just about premier League penalties?
