What a fabulous story.A few of us took my mate's Dad (Ken) to the City v Gillingham game in 1999 at Maine Road for his 70th birthday. As a treat we took him in one of the corporate suites where Buzzer was one of the Ambassadors.
By this time Ken was in the very early stage of dementia but he knew most of what was going on, one of the lads had a word with Buzzer as we got there and told him about Ken who had played for Stalybridge Celtic in the 50’s. So we’re having our nosebag and Buzzer was walking past our table, he suddenly stopped and said “Kennny R, isn’t it? I remember you playing for Stalybridge”. They had a chat for few minutes and Ken had the biggest grin on his face, it made his day, he absolutely loved it.
So happy Birthday Buzzer, a legend and a gentleman on and off the pitch.
I remember Michael telling how, upon his return to pre-season training, he was informed that a fee of £35 000 had been agreed between Swindon Town and City. and that he should drive up to Maine Road to speak to Sir Joe.
He was on £35/week at Swindon. On the drive up, he told himself that City are a big club, and they’ll be able to afford a decent wage for me. I’ll ask for £50. This amount gradually increased, until by the time he reached Manchester, he’d decided that he would demand £100/week.
Upon meeting Sir Joe, the City manager informed him, "We don’t have any money; you’re on £35 a week. We can off you £40".
Mike said that he accepted like a shot.
He has done a fantastic job as the club’s ambassador over the years, and I hope he continues to do so for many years to come.
We’ve met him on a few occasions, including at a book signing for his autobiography. He is still Mrs Vienna's favourite player.
Happy 80th Birthday, Buzzer. Keep telling it how it is
