Thought it was the way you were standing ;-)I'm having tea and cake in spring sunshine in "HAMTON COURT" Palace Rose Gardens as I type this - had worse lunch breaks in my 38 year working life
Not to mention Lords.....We live in a country with a queen, a prince and princesses. We also have dukes, baronesses and knights. Seriously WTF?
She's remained "in power" (even though she's not supposed to have any real power) simply because she's lived to 90 in the outdated and backwards feudal system we have.
Happy birthday Liz. Now it's time for a republic.
I think they way she handled her visit to Ireland half a decade or so ago, in the context of the historical backdrop, and how she was received by the Irish people there, in spite of that history, is one such example.I think a lot of your points are highly subjective.
She has advanced the role of the monarchy and made it more durable? I think that is highly debatable. I think the monarchy is now as unpopular as it has ever been. Whilst I think a large proportion of the blame for this can be laid at the door of her family as a whole, I think it is undoubtedly the case that there exists a larger proportion of the population who would happily see the UK as a republic than at any time before. I accept that this is probably still not a majority of the population of the UK, but it is sizeable. In fact, I suspect that an equally large proportion of the population's attitude to the Queen and her family is one of indifference. They might not dislike her and they may not want rid of the monarchy, but they are not enthused by her.
She's retained power in a highly skilled and adroit manner? She is a highly gifted diplomat? Again, highly subjective opinion of her abilities.
I'm disappointed. I thought you might come back with some concrete examples of when she has been 'remarkable'. I genuinely cannot think of a single instance.

By 'subjective' I assume you mean differentiates from your perspective. It's a forum and everyone is subjective to a certain extent. It would be a sinfully dull place if they weren't.
It's worthwhile noting that I'm opposed to the concept of monarchy and yet admire the person who embodies it, and you (presumably) are opposed to the concept of monarchy and don't admire the person who embodies it - and yet I'm the subjective one! :-)
I think she deserves remarking upon :-)No, by subjective I meant based on opinion rather than objective, meaning fact-based.
And still, the only thing you can think of that justifies your description of her as 'remarkable' is that she visited Ireland and went down rather well. Long after politicians on both sides of the divide took real risks and showed real courage in brokering the peace process.
I do agree that it would be very dull if we were all of the same opinion but I think your use of the word 'remarkable' to describe her was excessive.
Here we go again......A German Immigrant who's the biggest scrounger of the state having their birthday celebrated nationally. You'd expect UKIP to be all over it....
