Harry Dowd/Ken Mulhearn

Always remember the days when Harry was injured and we played Alan Ogley, heart stopping. Alan must have been the shortist goalkeeper in the league and his goalkicks only got about halfway to the halfway line. Hope Harry is ok. Is there anything we could do to make his life better?

[Does anyone know the name of the care home that Harry now resides ? As would love to get him to add his signature, if possible to the 1969 cup final programme but not sure how I would go about this[/quote]

If Harry is in a care home, he will probabley be frail and perhaps not up to people contacting him.....i may be wrong, but most likely best to check out with his family.
Hope city are doing the right thing by him!!

Harry was the better keeper, as said ken was the new kid.
One old guy stood near us every week would always be shouting as opponents attacked "harry's got it" regardless of which keeper was playing. We stood behind the goal in the scoreboard end so ken must have heard him.
Great memories.

Dya remember 'im scoring?

Sure do! Equaliser against Bury at Maine Road, scoreboard end.

A teenager called Bell scored for Bury - on his debut.

Yes, remember it well, stood behind the goal. Harry galloping after the ball with his hand/arm strapped to his opposite shoulder. I don't think he appreciated the painful congratulations after he scored. I always thought he was underrated, as was Matt Gray, who took over in goal that day.

Harry Dowd came to visit me when I was very ill in Booth Hall Hospital way back in the 60s, I was 12 at the time.
That precious memory has stayed with me and at the age of 62 I can say that Harry played a big part in my being a life long, totally devoted City fan.
Hope Harry is getting the support today that he gave to me.

Sorry to hear about Harry, best wishes to him.......

Anyone remember these favourites from the early/mid sixties?

Cliff Sear

Roy Gratrix

Jimmy Murray

Johnny Crossan

Stan Horne

David Connor

??

Dave Connor lived near us in Wythenshawe. I went to St Bede's and I can remember getting the bus to go to school and we'd both get off at the Bus Depot stop in Moss Side ... me to go through Alexandra Park to school and him to walk round to Maine Road for training.

I used to wag school to get autographs at Maine Road. We'd hang around the players entrance and you could peak through the keyhole and see the players coming and going. The day Joe Mercer arrived they had a press call and a few of us City fans sneaked into the main stand and shouted his name from the back of the stand ... he gave us a big wave before we were chased out of the ground. That was a big moment for a 12-year-old!

I can remember getting Harry Dowd's autograph outside training one day and he was talking to Peter Gardner of the MEN as he was signing our scrapbooks. I remember he was moaning to Gardner about his mother-in-law! One day it was absolutely freezing and lagging it down and Tommy Booth took pity on us and insisted we stand in the doorway to the player's entrance out of the rain.

We used to go to the match every week - first team one week, then reserves the next. You'd have Cliff Sear and Joe Hayes playing in the same team as Ogilvy and kids like Connor.

The thing I remember most about Ken Mulhearn was a misprint in the Football Pink that said "Ken Mulhearn saved a rocket of a shit." Fnar!

Roy Gratrix? One of the worst signings we ever made, even by our standards. The others you name were fine players, and I remember Stan Horne getting terrible stick from Everton fans in a 6th round cup tie at Maine Road in our promotion season. People weren't as PC as they are now and he was subjected to mass monkey chants. There were also fights in the old scoreboard end and there was all kinds of rubbish being thrown onto the pitch from there. That was my first taste of football hooliganism and sadly not the last.
