Have we improved since last season?
In the league?
Last season we finished in 9th place with 55 points, we need 17 from 21 available to get to that tally this season. No chance.

In the FA Cup?
Last season we were beaten by Sheffield United in the 4th round thanks to a balloon, this season we were beaten by Nottingham Forest who are on the verge of relegation to League One 3-0 on our own patch.

In the League Cup?
Last season we got to the quarter finals, this season we got beat by Brighton and Hove Albion in the first round who are on the verge of relegation to League Two.

So on them three points we have gone backwards alot in one season. People seem to cling onto the Uefa Cup when in truth we haven't really been tested by any decent sides so far bar a fantastic result in Schalke. The first real test in coming up with Hamburg.

Last season alot of credit was taken away from Sven, citing his 1-0 wins at home against the likes of Derby, Villa, Utd, Birmingham were all lucky, but no one has hardly said that our wins this season at home to Wigan, Middlesborough and Sunderland were lucky when we really were fortunate to come away with 3 points instead of 1 or maybe none.

The players this season are ALOT better than last seasons. So why the major backwards step?

I've said all along that i thought Mark Hughes wasn't good enough but was willing to give him time and to prove me wrong but he is not doing that at the moment. I am not saying this on the back on todays result because it was expected in truth, but i am looking at the bigger picture after 31 league games.

Serious question but are those who think Hughes is the man beleiving it because they really believe he is the man to lead the club to some success or are you saying it because you are sick of this club getting rid of manager after manager and you crave that stability?

I will probably get replies of "fuck off, go support another club", "another boo boy" but i am neither a Hughes lover or a Hughes hater, i just want City to be successfull and i don't care who gives it us, if Hughes is the man then great but i cannot see it but hope i am wrong as it will mean we have been successful and that is all i want.

whole premiership has got tighter this time..all bouncing around the same tally.......10 pretty average teams from 20...

Excellent post & I agree with everything you have said.
I have stuck up for Hughes so many times during the season when the usual arguement is "he's a rag", but serious questions have to be asked now on his reign. I am of the opinion now that he does not command respect, has no plan b & is very tactically naive. He also says the same old things every time we play away from home that we never improve on.

Yes I understand that he takes time to build a squad & challenge for things but this season given the investment, given the players he has (I know we have had injuries) we should be finishing at least 7th which is unlikely.

Like I put on a previous post it's disgraceful that Stoke have garnered more or less the same amount of points away as us & have had only one win. Bloody Stoke!, the way the play, it's nothing short of disgraceful & I feel sorry for the fans who pay their hard earned money to watch that crap, it's bad enough listening on the radio.

I don't mean to be overly pessimistic but I can only see us win 2 more league games & I think Hamburg will be too good for us, I hope i'm wrong.

People seem to cling onto the Uefa Cup when in truth we haven't really been tested by any decent sides so far bar a fantastic result in Schalke. Unlike the Forest and Brighton games. We lost them, we get through to the Q/Fs and we aint been tested. Make your mind upThe first real test in coming up with Hamburg. It's a Q/F

Lets not give any credit for beating teams by 5 or 6 then, hey? Luck aint allowed.

The players this season are ALOT better than last seasons. So why the major backwards step? Possibly getting used to each other?

I've said all along that i thought Mark Hughes wasn't good enough but was willing to give him time and to prove me wrong but he is not doing that at the moment. I am not saying this on the back on todays result because it was expected in truth, but i am looking at the bigger picture after 31 league games.Fair point. I'll judge after a season of total change.

Serious question but are those who think Hughes is the man beleiving it because they really believe he is the man to lead the club to some success or are you saying it because you are sick of this club getting rid of manager after manager and you crave that stability?Bit of both really. Don't like the constant changing, but you can't employ someone to do a job and sack them before they've done their's

I am not saying that, i am saying last season Sven was almost criticised for winning 1-0 and not gving any credit at all for coming away with a 1-0 win, this year we have had games which have turned out the same yet there is no criticism or being lucky, it has been praised that we can win ugly and grind out a result. What is the difference? Surely they all should be lucky or great ugly wins?

The players this season are ALOT better than last seasons. So why the major backwards step? Possibly getting used to each other? What about last season? There was more of a player turnaround and in less time, you cannot use that as an excuse.

If the same teams win the prem this year but does it with less points than last year would you say that they have gone backwards, or could it be that everyone else improved?

the bigger picture has improved.

giving hughes control over signings is a huge step forward for this club. even if we have payed a lot of money for some of the players, they are proper players. they work hard, they are committed and ambitious professionals. compare that to all the money we've wasted on talented-but-flawed (eg, castillo), can't be bothered(too many to mention), over-priced 'prospects' (samaras, jo), past-it (Mcmanaman, fowler, Weah), and downright awful(bradbury macken et al).

It's not just the money thats the problem. The whole football club has suffered from a reputation for accepting less than it should from it's players. this has rotted away at the heart of our club for as long as I can remember. MH has correctly identified that if he cant be sure of a player's commitment and professionalism, we cannot afford to sign them, even if money is no object.

Ok, so things arent right on the pitch, yet. Thats partly because of the huge turnover in players. Dunne is our longest standing senior player. apart from the boys who've come through the ranks, everyone else has just arrived.

thanks to MH, we all know now that there are at least 13 players who will be of use to us for several years to come. the benefit of having a core group of settled players will probably only bear fruit next year, and the year after that. if it doesnt come to pass, fair enough, MH looks like a dead duck. but so far, I reckon he's achieved quite a lot, even if our results dont always back that up.
