I do recall City playing a pre-season match against Hearts and losing 5-1 under new manager: Alan Ball!

When the Dundee game was announced, there were strong rumours that they would only be one game of a two-game mini-tour, so this seems perfectly logical to me.

No it won't. This is immediately before the US tour. It's the equivalent of those times in the last few years when we went to pre-season fitness camps in Austria and played local teams and other clubs at the fitness camp while we were there. This year we are doing our fitness camp in St Andrews.
That said, a lot of the World Cup players will not have returned to training by this point.
