Just before xmas i decided to ask for a new router because of a little problem with my old one connecting in the morning.Big mistake in my opinion. I like to have a radio website running in the background 5live or radio 2 but with my new router these were cutting out, usually after 4-5pm and quite often for maybe 30 seconds at a time. ive gone back to my old router and all is fine apart from the annoying bit in the morning. When i first turn on i cant see any available connections on my taskbar even though im connected. instead of the signal bars icon i have what looks like a square. when i connect to a radio site it buzzes about every minute or so. if i reboot the signal bar is there, i can see all the surrounding houses connections and all is rosy for the rest of the day. any ideas anyone? I hardly have anything running btw. just anti virus and whatever windows needs.

I gather you are listening to the radio through your PC, not through a WIFI radio?

If it's Win7... If you don't get any better advice:

Control panel->Network & Sharing Centre then go to Troubleshoot Problems and run the Internet Connections and Network Adaptor troubleshooting tools.

While radio frequency interference is going to be an issue in your home, one of the biggest causes of interference that'll slow down your Wi-Fi speed is other Wi-Fi routers in your area. That's often because most Wi-Fi routers default to the same channels: 6 or 11. (You don't need to understand all of this to fix the problem, but we'll explain.) Additionally, the standard channel width is 20 MHz, which means that even though you're on channel 6, which has a frequency of 2.437 GHz, your channel width spans 20 MHz around that frequency. Since each channel is only 5 MHz apart from the next, your signal is bleeding into the others. While you can adjust the channel width, this may only help some of the time as your router's needs will change. Ideally channel width would be adaptive, but since that isn't a reality the best thing you can do is pick a channel as far from the others as possible

Sounds like signal bleed to me.

try some of these tips

Why do you not leave your router on?

They are designed to stay on 24/7.

If you're using a program to access internet radio this might help you.

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.ehow.com/how_5859366_stop-internet-radio-cutting-out.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.ehow.com/how_5859366_stop-in ... g-out.html</a>

If you are using a pop up window from a website it sounds like an intermittent signal and you should call your ISP to rectify it.

sorry dazdon, i meant to say when i turn on pc not router. the old one has been fine apart from first thing in morning despite being in the cupboard for 6 weeks or more. will try them fixes later for radio. ta

Where is the router located in relation to your laptop? The same room or do you move around? If you're moving to the kitchen say, is there a fridge/microwave/TV in between the router and Laptop?
Which router is it? Especially what speed standard?
Have you checked your download speed using http://www.speedtest.net/ by first plugging the Laptop into the router and then wirelessly?

Cutting out after 4-5pm sounds like too much traffic on the line. Do you have children by any chance given the timing? Check the router setup page via your browser when it's cutting out to see if anyone else is hijacking your wireless connection, change your passwords on the router from the default.

router is wired in not wireless 2ft away. no children. the router im using now is the old one. D Link. I get no outages with the old one. the only problem i get with the D Link is first thing in morning when i boot pc. internet connects but the radio channels buzz. if i reboot all is fine for rest of the day. Just a bit annoying. speed is 11mbs to 13mbs. with the new one its fine first thing in morning until 4pm onwards, thats when the radio cuts out every hour or so. I can see my usage on talk talk website and nothing unusual there. Just seems a bit odd.
