Having op next Tuesday. Just wondered if anyone has had one done recently and what to expect. Also recovery time and how long before being able to get back to playing sport and other things ... ?

Hiatus or inguinal? I had an inguinal hernia repair and it took me around 12 weeks to recover fully. The gauze they put in does the job of holding everything in. Got a bloody big scar from it an’ all.

Our old dog had it done years back, poor bastard was miserable for months after, good luck!

Inguinal. It's keyhole surgery, so I'm not expecting a big scar!

Mate of mine went in for an op on is hernia years ago,he ended up getting circumcised good look,he got a right pay out.

Ask them to do both while they are in there. My cousin is a firefighter got a hernia on the job. The surgeon told him he was going to put the mesh covering or whatever it is over the openings on both sides to reduce the chance of it happening again on his other side.

I had the keyhole surgery last September, was back at work in a week no heavy lifting for a few weeks, it not bad at all, surgeon came in to see me afterwards to say it was a substantial hernia, hopefully puts some perspective on it.

2 months ago in Aberystwyth general. Dr Salami was the surgeon. Nice guy.
Went in for keyhole surgery whereby they put a mesh in between the whatnot and the thingymabob and I now look like I've been run through by a pitchfork.
All the usual questions and paperwork just prior to the op then the needle where they administer the knock out drops. Didn't even realise I was being given the anesthetic and went out like a light.
Missed the nurse tidying me up 'downstairs' but it does give you a pleasant sense of wellbeing afterwards when viewed in a mirror or shop window.
Woke up on the ward and felt OK until the Mrs turned up to collect me a couple of hours later. Worst hangover feeling I've ever had, really bad..... had to get her to stop the car 3 times just so as I could get out and walk around.
Farting, coughing, sneezing, laughing, even having a No2 and getting in and out of a car and bed is painful for at least a week but they do suggest various pain killers, eased up on the lifting at work as you'll always be conscious of it after all that. I'll admit to only taking a couple of paracetamels just in case....
Told not to drive for 2-3 weeks and they suggested I contact my insurance Co. who kindly suggested I contact my Dr, who then suggested I contact my insurance Co. I was driving without a problem after 2 1/2 weeks. Been 8 weeks now and I'm due back for a check up a week today. A few little twinges but all OK so far.

As for playing sports...I'd suggest you talk to a specialist.

I had one in 2000, I think it was the hiatus one, my bowel was popping through my stomach wall and by the end of the day it looked like a third testical down below.
I went private and had it done at Bury General, comes to putting the gown on and getting ready for the op and the nurse who was a bit of a bruiser said do you want me to shave you down below so I politely declined and said I'll do it.
As the hernia was on the left she told me to shave just the left side down below.
So I did!
Every bit from the top to the bottom.
When I shown the nurse she burst out laughing as I was only supposed to shave along the top where the hair line was.
Oops.
I was off work about 7 weeks but my hair down below took a lot longer than that to grow back plus it itched somert chronic in the process that's for sure.

I've had a problem recently where a couple of times I've had a sneezing fit and my left ball has swollen to about twice the size. Excruciating pain only relieved if I held my balls up! Does that sound like a hernia? Happened twice in the last year.
