"Historical importance" Wild card entry for champions league

It's a good idea. Football is a commercial enterprise and certain clubs generate huge revenue for the game. This includes the rags. So a wild card entry works in terms of the commercial viability of the game whilst at the same time placing an at-best shite team in the mix against whom we could play some of our fringe players so that they get CL experience.
Always thinking outside of the coporate box.

Indeed. Maybe we should give Carl Lewis a place in the 100m final while we're at it, or give Mike Tyson another shot at the heavyweight title.

Of course what we all know is that it won't be 'historical teams' that will be allowed a buy into the competition, it'll be the rich clubs that can't qualify on merit. You can guarantee that they would have Arsenal in ahead of Notts Forest or Aston Villa despite never having won the competition, for example.

why don't UEFA just make a score predictor machine, adjust the percentages like they do on fruit machines to suit their historical favorites and pull the handle for qualification, i'm sure it would be very popular with clubs like Man U,Liverpool and Arsenal, we could be blessed with a 15 minute slot on BBC at peak viewing time where we can all gather round and watch,,,better still it would be nice if our owner just fucked them all off for being a bunch of bent corrupt liars

Benfica
Porto
Steau Bucharest
Feyenoord
Notts forest
Aston Villa
Hamburg
PSV Eindhoven
Red star
Just some of the other teams who have won it so will they be invited as historical winners if not already qualified through their league ..

The whole concept is ridiculous in terms of "sport" but you make a very decent point in the super clubs viewpoint : let's create a competition where we are de facto invited as founding members, then let's make it you don't need to qualify anymore if you are not among the 2 teams relegated in each group, then let's put in some really below level teams who have a great past. Not only those "old legendary" clubs will be happy but we are making sure we have not a threat to be relegated.

This is absolutely genius.
