Covid and travel discussion

Next door neighbour has just got back from 2 weeks in Tenerife. He said most of the bars and amenities are shut and they're really struggling, quite sad.

It's catastrophic for global tourism, and I fear many will never be able to come back from this.

From a pilot working for Emirates, through to a local Taverna owner on a Greek island; everyone is fucked to some degree.

And there really is no end in sight.
So many destinations are going to be off limits until at least 2022, if not longer depending on how well the global vaccine roll out goes.

One of our specialist tour operators for Australia and New Zealand are not taking bookings for departures before Autumn 2022.

As good as it was to see the green list extended the other day, the harsh reality is that it's a tiny tiny step in the right direction, and the road ahead is very long.

Ah well, least we can all holiday in the UK for the next 50 years ;)

The very few bars that are open are the smaller ones that the ex pat's that live there use, beefed up now and then with whatever small amount of tourists that come out. I have friends who run a very popular bar out there, it's been established for over 30 years but relies on tourist, many returning three or four times a year. So since the pandemic they have only opened for three weeks over Christmas and New Year when a group of maybe 30-50 regulars came out. Even then they were only open on the terrace as the indoor had to remain closed and the bar had to shut at 10pm. So three weeks maximum trade over fifteen months. It's heartbreaking.

I suppose much will depend on how much support they are getting and how much they have put away for a rainy day during the good times. I’m sure tourism will bounce back at some point but it’s a dire situation, I agree.

When the dust settles, governments will look back on this period and the failure to support/open up certain industries will be as big as if not bigger failures than those deaths deemed “unavoidable”.

I'm booked to Crete in August. Double vaccinated this week, but Crete reporting a high number of people not taking the vaccine over there sadly. The Delta variant is spreading and expected to be dominant strain by.... August, so they may impose local lockdowns on areas if needed. Al 15 cases of Delta variant were NON-Vaccinated people. They are working so hard to speed vaccinations up rather than lockdown but it's food for thought. I think officials will bow to financial pressure and hope they've caught the majority of people with jabs. 33% double jabbed in Greece atm

I'm double jabbed, missus is refusing to have it. Gutted wanted to go away in Sept, can't risk it with her.
