Holocaust Memorial Day - Monday 27 January

Surprised no-one had bumped this one by now.

Just awful still to consider these events.

I'd like to think we are combatting fascism in the world but I fear populism's rise has been hijacked by the neo-fascists.

Dreadful footage doing the rounds today and a random attack om two orthodox Jewish men last night - both beaten and punched to the ground by a young man whom it seems has been arrested.

Attacking two Jewish shopkeepers in Stamford Hill, what's random about that?

Seems targeted to me.

Watching footage on various news channels today brought back memories of a couple of visits I have had to Auschwitz while following England to numerous Poland matches. Such a sad and surreal experience. In 1989 on my 1st visit there I was taken aback with no birds singing, the silence and it was as if the place had barely been touched when comparing pictures with real life then. To see groups of school children being taken around as part of their education was something that must have left a life lasting impression as it did with myself and one that was/is hard to process.

Just watched the video on the original post. I was moved to tears, what an incredible woman.

This should be an historical lesson that must be heeded and never be repeated.

Has this occured again? Is a debate for another thread.

We're a couple of years away from there being no survivors, now is the time to ramp up the coverage to really relay the importance of both remembering and ensuring a repeat never happens.

Firmly believe everybody should visit auschwitz if possible. I'd consider myself more informed than the average person about it but you simply cannot appreciate just how horrowing it is until you visit.

Get a local guide, their broken English might be a little difficult to understand at times but they have far better knowledge and personal stories to tell.

Not a substitute, but the exhibition in the (London) Imperial War Museum is quite impressive (a small permanent bit left after a larger exhibition). At least I think it's still there. They've revamped the Holocaust galleries.
