Homegrown options

What's the status of Will Hughes? Were we not linked with him a while back.
I can't say I've seen too much of him to know if he's any good. I just know he was highly rated.
Anyone know how he's progressed?

He made the smart move to spend the last 3 years improving at Derby, and was their player of the season last year.

Beautiful footballer who keeps the ball moving on the deck and would fit in perfectly with our foreign talent.

Could quite easily just sign 1 HG player

An example:

Senior Squad:

Hart*
Caballero
Wright*
-------------
Zabaleta
Kolarov
Clichy*
Kompany
Mangala
Demichelis
---------------
Yaya Toure
Pogba
Fernandinho
Aranguiz/Fernando
Silva
Nasri
Navas
---------------
Aguero
Bony
19. Villa/foreign ST

16 foreign/3 HG

U21:
Denayer (cover RB (if he can)+CB)
Lopes
Sterling
Iheanacho
(+all youth players)

Practical squad of 23 (16 foreign/3HG/4U21)

We ended the season with a 23 man squad

Hart, willy, Wright

zabaleta, Maffeo
Kompany, Demichellis
Denayer, Mangala
Clichy, Kolarov

Aranguiz, Fernandinho
Yaya, Pogba,

Sterling,
silva, Lopes
De Bruyne, Nasri

Aguero, Bony, iheanacho

That would be my perfect squad for next season

Do you think he would be cheaper than Delph and be available?

Home grown keeper is a no brainer.

Pellegrini signing Willy is as big a gaffe as Hughes signing Rocky. £7m for an old, bang average, back up keeper who takes the place of a potential foreign player who could improve us. Ridiculous when you think about it

Yup, pretty sure that still has room for one more foreign player(Navas) and one more homegrown, non club trained over 21 player as well. (presumably what Delph was for) Our "need" for HG players is not nearly as desperate as people suggest, we only actually have room for 2 more as it is (unless they are going to be club trained, or don't mind missing out on the CL squad)

I'm not sure I disagree with the fact that it's a mistake, but I certainly disagree with vehemency. Hart was on extremely shakey ground this time last year, on the heels of a very disappointing season. The idea was that we needed to sign competition for Hart -- somebody who could legitimately lay a claim to the starting keeper spot -- rather than a backup keeper. Willy was one of the best keepers in La Liga two years ago. He was relatively cheap, by City standards. It's easy to be revisionist on the back of a good season from Hart, but there's an argument we wouldn't have gotten the best out of him without Willy.

Again, not sure I agree with wasting the HG spot on our current second-choice keeper. Comparing it to Santa Cruz is ridiculous though, even if it's just hyperbole for the sake of it.
