Houses or Parliament Restoration

Since 2022 its gone up to £25bn - to give that context the Burj Khalifa took $1.5bn and 5 years to build. The Snedd was £70m and the Scottish Parliament £414m. Surely we need to break away from this traditional mindset that is wasting money and just build new from scratch in a new location for cheaper?

In fairness the Scottish Parliament looks like a call centre canteen.

Not saying I like them and I know the questions over Burj Khalifa construction but the proposals over the Houses of Parliament are just stupidly expensive and spread out over a mad time scale. It has the Sagrada Familia written all over it with the lack of certainty only HS2 can offer

I have no opinion as to whether mps sit there or in some new purpose built building. Surely though if this work needs doing to an historic building ,it needs doing and as a historic building whether mps sit there or or not we owe it to future generations to maintain it and keep it for them to use as they see fit.

The HoP are basically a museum & not fit for purpose for a modern parliament facility.
For a fraction of the money, a new purpose built facility could be built, perhaps near to east mids airport, where there is plenty of land & has existing motorway & air travel nearby.
By all means keep the HoP, but why not involve the private sector to help with funding & turn it into another money making tourist attraction. You could still use it for the ceremonial events like state opening of parliament, but for all the day to day parliament business to be conducted in a modern fit for purpose facility outside of expensive London.
And while we are at it, sort it out so that MP’s can work/debate/vote remotely from their publicly funded constituency offices & start working in the 21st century.

Stick it Birmingham. You can redevelop brownfield land that isn't currently in use and achieve a net zero target. It will then be in the middle of the country and better connected to transport hubs than ever before.

You can either make the palace of Westminster a museum or ...

I dont trust any contractor to build anything to last these days.
Buildings like the Houses of Parliament, and even Manchester Town Hall, should be cherished for the sheer beauty, vision and artistry that went into making them much admired landmarks by generations.

I can’t make my mind up as to what’s worse, the vast sums involved or the length of time it’ll supposedly take!!

Must have one hell of a leaky roof!!

You are looking at the end of the century or beyond ( there are bound to be time - and cash - overruns ) Sunak became and MP agd 35 - Dehenna Davision 25. For it to inspire a new batch of Politicians they will probably have to be born in 2085 or beyond. In that time the establishment will have been housed in one ( possibly more than one ) new modern establishment. Will they want to move to that place? If you think how the workplace has changed since the late 1940's to date ( a similar length of time ) why would they want to do that?

I'd say sell it on the basis it it MUST be made into flats - prime building land - and use the cash there to fund the construction of a new state of the art facility / facilities.
