How do we fix our Economy and the country?

Putting to one side party politics for the moment, what needs to happen to put an end to this mess?

We cant continue down this road we are on.

We need to find a way to pay down the national debt for starters.
How can we get people back into work and contributing to society.
How can we become more productive as a nation.
Can we improve our infrastructure?
How can we overhaul the entire welfare system.
How do we become more self sufficient?

I have never understood this career politician lark, why do we not try having the countries top economical minds in charge of the economy?

Our political system is adversarial and is not designed for parties to work together. Neither does it ensure that people who are fit to run the country are elected to do that (see BJ and potentially Farage, no wonder we are in an almighty mess). We are pretty much in 'war time' territory such is the seriousness of the challenges that face the country economically, socially, climate wide and through risk of war. To achieve what you listed is the work of two or three parliaments and requires strategic long term planning and we really do need a war cabinet with the best minds and the best leadership and an electorate who have the patience not to vote them out at the first opportunity. A plan needs to be set out and communicated every day of the week (good luck with that eh MSM). Progress needs to be seen to be made every three/six months. Massive investment is needed to improve productivity, improve the countries infrastructure and transform us to clean energy exporters. It could be done but not with the folk that run the show just now.

Sadly all pie in the sky and we will continue on our downward spiral.

Let's raise a people's army and seize control of the state.

Or

Make trade with our nearest trading bloc easier and cheaper.
Release wealth from property and pension funds to invest in infrastructure projects and housing
Improve workers rights and benefits to make employment pay and be more attractive than the alternatives
Make society fairer by forcing those with the most to pay the most - corporations and individuals
Ignore all calls to any form of cultural warfare, it really doesn't matter as much as they want you to think.

I saw a stat on social media that said the lifting of the 2 child cap means that a single mother with 3 children who is out of work will earn more than someone who has no children and works full time on minimum wage.

Make that make sense?
 
1. Stop paying for translators / interpreters in the NHS, welfare system etc. It costs millions and without sounding xenophobic, if you understand the system well enough to get free medical help, child benefit etc then you either bring someone with you for meetings who speaks the language or you learn the language
2. There are thousands of people claiming benefits who shouldn't be, employ a huge department to check on claimants and stop the fraudulent claims. The amount they save will pay for a huge amount of people to work reduce the numbers
3. Stop wasting money on pointless schemes (both central and local government) that should never have seen the light of day i.e. HS2. Great in principle but obviously nobody did a proper cost risk analysis
4. Reduce public sector pensions - it's obscene the amount paid out
5. Stop party politics bickering and have cross party committees to make the big decisions, making the decision transparent. We know there is more than one way to skin a cat so reach a consensus and run with it instead of endless back and forth and attempted point scoring

I could think of plenty more things but I am just so tired of it all.

Good questions but I think you've missed an important step in the process. Before you ask how do you fix the mess you need to ask how did we really get into it in the first place, because by properly understanding the root causes the chances of finding the 'right' fixes will increase.

One of the reasons we argue so much is we lack a common understanding or consensus on how we got here and what has caused our maladies. Without achieving that we are doomed to continue to argue about the prescription.
 
privatisation can work, once the utterly failed system of "watchdogs" is sorted. The civil service mandarins are guilty of anti-democratic decisions, like using government money to pay atos (£100,000000) to dismantle the benefit system, the DWP raid on the pensions of women, and the age at which it can be claimed by all, the cliff-edge approach to carers allowances, their demands for full and immediate return of over-payments that THEY caused, and escaped accountability. The post-office,the poisoned blood scandal (still resisting accountability ffs) the forced entry to fit water-meters, water shortages, the fact it is far from pure is yet another example of how in-the-pocket of suppliers offshit are.Stnding charges that go to share-holders and not to maintenance, railways and roads not fit for purpose, teachers and nurses, firefighters, the police, the justice system, all past breaking point. And these could be the "good times", the race to the bottom is far from done............merry christmas
