How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

Somebody at some point is going to have to be honest with the population as a whole. “COVID and the Ukraine war has put severe pressure on our economy which will continue for years. And leaving the EU, particularly the single market/customs union, has made it incredibly difficult to achieve the economic growth required to get out of the mess.”

Surely it isn’t hard to say it without triggering the defence mechanisms of those responsible too much.

Interesting you don't reference the obvious damage caused by Brexit

Not going to get mea culpa from those who voted Leave, but perhaps now the Omerta can be broken and politicians can actually attribute much of the current mess to Brexit. The country is in need of counselling and speaking about it now might stop more mistakes being made. Reopening the conversation will also help people appreciate that Brexit is far from done.
Much of it? All of it

They won’t listen to it, even now.

Yes but you have to - Brexit is predicted to be twice as damaging to the economy and therefore living standards and for much much longer - if you take into account how damaging and when you factor in longevity its Brexit and THEN Covid - Ukraine is a here and now but its longevity is as yet indeterminate

That’s what I was trying to subtly say in a form palatable to people who caused this. I’m just saying that whoever takes some responsibility for trying to save the country doesn’t have to move into “You did this” territory to try to coax people into understanding the financial mess and it’s links to Brexit.

Me? I haven’t moved past wanting to scream “we told you so” at people for being gullible fools.

yes we have - they don't listen to that. What is stopping it being explained calmly and rationally though?

The war in Ukraine is having a huge impact on food, fuel, and energy, so Brexit cannot take all the glory.

a divided Europe signalled distracted Europe to Putin. Plus as I said Brexit is predicted to be at least twice as damaging as Covid and I accept Ukraine is an open ended commitment who's total cost cannot yet be calculated.

However what I would say we take very little Russian gas or oil and we import most of our wheat from places like Canada France and Germany so the direct effect is elsewhere except for the upward pressure place on the supply price on world markets. So far the major drain on the UK economy of the war is the cost of support in money munitions and training we spend on the Ukraine conflict

It’s also a Europe that had ridden on the American coattails for defence for far too long, including the U.K.

That's not so. The USA spends more of GDP than NATO countries, but that's because it's got bases around the world, not just in Europe.

So why did they vote Tory ?

Brexit and forriners is my bet - all the ones I meet from the Red Wall are only about those subjects - tell them that all those thing referenced are under major ownership of European and American ownership and they glaze over and don't want to hear - tell them that thanks to Brexit EU workers that understandably went home during the pandemic to be near families and now cannot come back because they fail to meet the requirements and they blame farmers and the NHS for not paying enough and show them the data that Brexit has ended up with more people coming here from outside the EU to work - brown people who are of a certain religion and they go apoplectic. Sorry but peoples reasons to leave in my experience were very narrow ninded and they cannot accept that had wider consequences.
