because the problems we had last season haven't been solved. We needed a 17/18 style window where we just went out and got it done, and Pep to own up and accept he's made mistakes in both setup and philosophy in the past 12 months and needs to re-adjust to take us back to a side that will reach its peak again. Bayern and Liverpool have shown where the gains are and teams have nullified the increasingly Barca approach we've been taking. Lyon is a fresh wound and I've seen little in the past couple of months to suggest we're addressing what, as noted by the majority discussing them on here, are clear issues.
If we were at this stage and it had been "bang, here's Laporte's new partner, here's the new LB, here's the athletic DM we need to cope in the PL, here's the defensive and midfield deadwood gone and here's the different option we're bringing in to show we've got a different plan and flexibility for next season" then I'd be a lot more optimistic. We've not even had a pre-season friendly and we're going to a team we got beat by twice next week to start us off, forgive me for feeling we're seriously undercooked and going to be chasing all over again instead of laying down markers that people will have to keep up with us.
We have a history of either winning the title or dropping miles behind, and normally our title winning summers give us a lot of optimism, the only exception in 18/19 but we managed to preserve a very high level that year but then we made misjudgements on what had worked the past 2 years and what we needed to really refresh, bring fresh impetus so we could keep up the following year.
Just a honest assessment from my point of view, I'd love to be more optimistic but there's specific things I wanted to see happen this summer and they haven't yet so I can only judge it at this point, I'd love Pep to pull a rabbit out of the hat but the last time he tried he pulled out a turd for the Lyon game, so my faith has taken a knock.
