Mods please merge if appropriate but I think this is a discrete thread but probably could have gone in the referee thread, the MOTD threads, the VAR thread, or the corruption thread!

With Shearer publicly going after PIGMOL on the tele last night and with us being in the third season of VAR (with lots and lots of problems with that) what, if anything, can change it and will it change?

ideas from me:
1/ Look back at the common issues over the last 3 yrs and write some case studies on application to supplement the LOTG
2/ Immediately mic up officials and Stockley Park and give the feed to clubs and TV
3/ put a 60 second clock on all VAR interventions. That’s all stockley park get to review things
4/ if the VAR official thinks the ref could call it differently if they had the advantage of replays the only way the decision gets changed is if the ref does it themselves after reviewing the screen
5/ allow refs to do post match interviews
6/ have a timekeeper and take that away from the ref
7/ if the VAR lines overlap on an offside decision it is onside

Looking around Europe for best practices and bringing in referees / VAR advisors to train our referees. That will take time though so I’d be using foreign referees for now.
I know this thread will descend into a corruption conspiracy but IMO it’s almost entirely down to incompetence that is impacting all teams in one way or another.

Getting rid of Mike Riley for a start
Step 1 definitely
Step 2 Transparency between on field and var officials
Step 3 Var from a different pool of refs to get rid of stick for my mate and he’ll cover me in a few weeks malarkey they seem to have currently.

1 Stop hiding behind phrases like subjective and clear & obvious, as well as the many others they use for excusing bad refereeing/blatant cheating.
2 We get told how fans are the most important part of football (didn’t lockdown games prove that) so the VAR system as well as refereeing in general needs to be more transparent, and illustrated a lot better for fans in stadiums.
3 Finally, referees need to be held accountable for poor performances, not get rested for the following game on full pay, instead we have the ridiculous situation of ex refs coming out & defending them, and up until this weekend the red media condoning their actions.
For me as a City fan VAR has been broken since it’s inception and refereeing was always hit & miss, I’m certainly not gonna be jumping on the bandwagon for reforms now that Livarpool have had a couple of contentious decisions, suck it up!
