How important are Qualifications really?

I did alright at school for qualifications, but the job I do they are not necessary ! Like was pointed out before if you go straight into work it's a good 3 years of experience under your belt ! Saying that in today's job climate I would suggest that it would do no harm to have some qualifications on your CV as it might give you the edge over another candidate !!

I left school with 11 GCSE's, went to college got 4 A Levels and then got a job programming websites with no IT qualifications at all, and just learnt on the job. Was doing quite well until I jacked it in to set up my gardening business. Did a horticulture qualifcation to get me qualified enough to do the job.

I think qualifications, especially GCSE's are a good barometer of how a person will work. If someone comes to you with say more than 6 GCSE's, you'll get the impression they're a decent worker, will listen and can learn. But if someone has 1 or 2 GCSE's, then you form an opinion on what the person was like at school (i.e. lazy, not arsed about working, probably in trouble from time to time and not dedicated enough to their work)

I'm not brian of Britain, but I worked hard at school and college. That's what an employers looking for at the end of the day.

The "3 years experience better than qualifications" mantra doesn't work in the many professions that require a degree or have a glass ceiling, beyond which you cannot progress without one. I also think with the way the world is heading, into massive recession, for the few jobs thatbare left employers are going to be able to pick and choose the best qualified.

Spot on, my missus had 10 yrs management experience, but without a degree she couldn't get any higher in her profession. She's at Uni now, and should be able to get ahead by the time the 'greatest depression' is over in about 3 years.
Get qualifications. Go to university.... If I had my time again, I would.

Sadly too many kids aspire to such vacuous celebrity, without even the tad of talent that Beckham had. Look at the zombies that turn up for Reality show auditions.
