Hugh McIlvanney

Died today, one of the best from a time when sports and football journalists were great writers and very knowledgeable about their subject..

One of the great sports journalists it has been my pleasure to read, his reports of Ali's great fights with Joe Frazier and George Foreman will forever stand the test of time, will be sorely missed in this day and age of bullshit

One of his great strengths was his ability to write about a range of sports, I suppose that was because he wrote about the people as much as their sport.

I always enjoyed his column, but it was a bit sad when, near the end, he blotted his copy book with intemperate attacks on the Premier League in general and City in particular. The first attack on City relied on a misreading of the league table and included "City might buck up and....." We had just gone 16 games unbeaten, had won the league cup and were 5 points behind Liverpool with 2 games in hand. The Dippers then beat us..Enter slippy!

Like you, I thought it was sad when he started that because he was one of the greats, his boxing coverage was outstanding, a real insight. He was however very close to Ferguson so I think that he might have been influenced. I'm not letting get it in the way of some brilliant stuff he produced though. Can't see any of the current crop of "hacks" ever getting close to him, probably the end of an era.

Had one of the great voices as well. He narrated a series, I think, of BBC films on the history of Scottish football that I recorded on tape at the time - not sure if I still have it, although my video recorder died about 18 months ago.
Still can be heard on Sky's great football teams/players films on their football channel.

He made one of sports greatest docs about 3 great Scots, Busby, Stein, Shankly, some of it filmed behind the Kippax stand, Hope the BBC give it a repeat showing, it was made about 20 years ago.
