Hughes' Legacy

Can I just say that Kompany was bought first and foremost as a CB who can help out in midfield, hardly a midfield signing is he. Also the OP conveniently forgets the signing of SWP who is not defensive and does create and score. We have plenty of creativity in our squad in fact three of them were sitting on the bench against Stoke.

I think the problem is, is that hughes was obsessed with buying defensive midfielders, he would of had a team of 11 DM's if he could of!!

He sure did imagine this as a classy Hughes midfield

Zablettea De Jong Kompany Barry

he would have loved to have played
He was buying a creative midfielder in jan & i'm sure if mancini felt he needed players he would have gone after them straight away rather than waiting till the last minute & missing out.
Anyway this squad is good enough that ANY manager would get it in the chumps league or has that changed.

i'm pretty confident that he was bought as a defensive midfielder. he has said himself, on many occasions, that is his preferred position. all our creativity you talk about comes from the wings, except for ireland and he is not top four class, and wingers are notorious for their unpredictability. do you think swp has been good this season?

all transfers in jan seem to go to the last minute this has nothing to do with the manager but the selling and buying clubs, dont start blaming him for things he has no control over

I don't think also that Hughes was buying players to fit Mancini's bizarre 4-3-1-2 formation but to fit his favoured 4-3-3 where only 1 attacking midfielder is needed and 2 players who are wingers/strikers (i.e. Petrov, SWP, Bellamy, Tevez). I don't think he could have envisaged a subsequent manager playing two tall target men up front and no wingers on to cross balls in for them as on Tuesday. If the team is deficient then I can't see where. We had 3 central midfielders on against Stoke (all of whom do not get forward enough) and three attacking midfielders sitting on the bench. Wierdness!

who was that creative player? scott parker? david bentley? yes, all the players are good, to a degree, but we definitely lack a midfield dynamo. although i bet mark hughes feels that barry falls into that category.

So in a team where Robinho was playing and was our top scorer, Ireland gets our player of the season and is the player most other teams think is exceptional (including United fans). Yet he isn't top four material? Where have you been looking? He's had a quiet season but this season has been a poor one for injuries and other problems (i.e. managers being sacked half way through) I still think he's potentially class but he hasn't had a run in the team for ages. Literally months!

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised, the timing of Hughes's sacking makes me think it was at least partly related to his transfer targets.

tell me, seriously, do you think stephen ireland is, or will ever be, in the same group of players as gerrard, lampard, arshavin, and fabregas? that's what i mean by a top four player.

you have to remember swp did nothing when he came on and has been inconsistent since re joining city, also ireland has been average now for a while, it seems to me that if a manager tries different players and different formations and performances are still pretty average then maybe the problem is that the players arent good enough collectively to reach the next level, its a cop out to say if so and so played we would turn into a decent team
