I don't get arena gigs

I don't think anyone will disagree with the op but its simple.
Small bands small venues.
Big bands big venues.

it's the only way they can make good money sadly, unless you are Oasis or somebody that can sell out stadiums or parks then it's the Arena's for most, Selling your music by media download is dead on its arse, so until somebody can produce a new format that is impossible to copy then bands or music will milk the fans with Arena tours

the last 2 years Vinyl has surpased download for music sales for many bands who could choose smaller but profitable venues.

I went to watch KISS at the AO Arena a few months back and they were fuckin awesome as were RUSH a few years back, I suppose you need a top Live Band to play a big Arena, just a shame it wasn't built when QUEEN with Freddie were around.

Fully agree with the OP. Ironically, I recall seeing pics of bands playing arenas in the US back in the 70's .... Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin etc, and always thought they looked great. Was quite envious then.

Realistically, as the OP says, they are absolutely soulless. And I don't see the point in paying £daft to be so far from the stage, that you watch most all the gig on the screens at the side of said stage.

The Manc Arena/Nynex/whatever you wish to call it is even worse than most, as the acoustics are notoriously shocking unless front centre.

It would take something like my beloved Cheap Trick supported by Prince, Led Zeppelin and Jeff Buckley to get me back into one. ;-)
