I understand why hughes has signed proven premiership players because we need a core of players who can make an instant impact. I applaud this strategy as it also weakens the clubs we buy from.
However £22million for lescott the guy who Ali bernabia took the piss out of so much he got sent off for a rather rash challenge a few years ago is a step too far. I realise that the money is somewhat irrelevant to our owners ie the difference between 15mil and 22 mil is like a fiver to most of us. But if we had 22mil to spend on defence then luisao and alves could be purchased with change. Both I believe are as good as lescott if not better. And certainly better than distin at age 31 and in my opinion upson at any age.
I suppose my point is lescott is a good player but luisao and alves could both be bought for less money and would add to ned, toure, dunne and kompany when fit as options at centre back. Surely a good partnership would emerge from that selection. So give up hughsey on this over priced player, tell moyes to do one and look overseas. Amen.

i tend to agree with you. time to be a little bold. no point waiting until january whatsoever. no more half measures, no more 'we'll get it sorted next time', cos that is the wrong way to approach a league campaign.

look hughes knows its now or never for him, he cant wait for some unproven foreign sort to come in and take time to bed in he needs prem proven to gel quick. if that means paying a premium then so be it, its not my money and the sheikh obviously trusts his judgement

Basically this. Hughes doesnt want to make any risky signings because he knows this is basically his last season if he doesn't achieve the targets he has set. Bit annoying we're only after PL players and paying over the odds for almost all of them, but it will be easier for the squad to gel since they know the league.

Don't agree that we're weakening our opponents, if we give Moyes £22m plus for Lescott I'm betting they would be stronger than they would be if we don't.

But I do agree we should stop this obsession with prem proven.

You have answered your own questions, not just Hughes but as a club as a whole there us no room for error, it HAS to work, end of,

in Hughes we trust.

And what happens then? We need to replace those consistent prem proven players who are never going to be good enough to take us that next step further (I don't put all of our signings into that category).

And we have the same gelling problems, and the same pressure on Hughes job.

Prem proven is great but if you're sacrificing quality for premiership experience it's not the right way to go IMO.

Lets not forget people just because someone has played in the Premiership it doesn't mean that he will instantly be a hit with his new club. Sure the Premier League player has the upper hand with Cultural, Playing style etc. But IMO it is easier for defenders to settle into the league then a Mid or Forward. Carvalho, Hangeland, Vidic, Skrtel, Agger, Toure...I could deadset be here all day naming players. 22 mil for Lescott is an absolute rip off and like the OP said i would be far happier with Alves, Luisao or someone else. Lescott for me is a step sideways.

if this is the case then i just see him as a bit of a spineless manager with no faith in his own ability to find talent, is this really the type of manager that can take us to the top? i like hughes and apart from a short spell last season have always wanted him to stay but out of all of our summer signings (which im 100% happy with) there isnt one that i can say "fooking hell hughsey thats a brilliant find" and that worries me a little.

i think our signings have been superb to be honest!! all the signings bar taylor obviously are top top quality and would even be fighting for a starting place even with any superstars.selection has to come with form not name and i think players like barry and tevez will bust their balls for the shirt just to be picked.dont forget though we could be sitting here with john terry (if he would have had the balls) and eto`o in our ranks as well so i think we need to look what a bloody squad we have and be very very proud.picking the 11 to start every week is gonna be very very difficult for mh but hopefully will spur on the players to fight to get in the starting 11.we also now have options for home and away which will allow us to say to the likes of robi that on a freezing november/december away trip to hull etc..that he can take a break and send out the battlers rather than relying on the flair all the time.
