IAAF World Championships 2017

Last chance this weekend for medals.

Best hope is Mo in the 5,000m then probably the relay squads.

Trouble is the 100m relay teams have history of dropping the baton or running out off the change over box, and the 400m squads are sometimes guilty of blocking incoming runners.

All in all for the money spent on athletics and the fact the event is being held in our own country, the squad have performed abysmally.

Think the lottery people might want to divert some of the vast sums of money into sports we are actually competitive at.

They do. Funding is dependent on performance.

You could actually argue that the more accessible sports like athletics should get more funding than sports like rowing.

Good start for GB in the 4 x 100m relay.

Surprised Dina Asher-Smith ran one of the legs this morning after competing last night.

GB 4 x 100m men record the second fastest time ever by a British team in the relay heats.

If the bloke running the last leg hadn't intentionally slowed up towards the line, it would have been a new British record!

Women's 4 x 400m team through to the final. Bahamas rested Miller-Uibo for the final and then failed to qualify, which is good news for GB who were third fastest in the heats.

Men's team through to the final. Botswana rested Makwala and then failed to qualify. GB fourth fastest in the heats.

But then we'll fail to win at future events as the funding isn't there. We should be funding training programmes for kids in high schools and helping the talented ones take it as a career and eventually we'll be as good as the USA or other countries. We need to start at a younger level with funding and coaching at all sports in this country, keep the kids active from an early age which will help the obesity epidemic which is not too far away if not already here.
Get them involved early enough and let's generate a nation of winners.
