If Celtic and Rangers are so big.. how come they only have 1M and 500k instagram followers?

Ooh very spicy thread, like both sets of fans shrieking at seeing Ally McCoist wearing a Celtic shirt in some film causing distress on both sides.

No interest in Scottish football or either team but both be a lot bigger in modern times if only those old firm clubs greed didn't force the ITVdigital deal through... The subsequent demise of the league as a whole was down to both clubs wanting elite money which under the deal they would've received. That deal along with the EFL one caused the inept bankruptcy of ITVdigital, and it really damaged Scottish football and with SKY not buying rights for a few years probs to teach them a lesson it made things worse, before that there was a UCL winner in Sauzee joining Hibs and once well known highly regarded Caniggia joining Dundee, plenty of foreigners that'd join mid to lower end prem teams as a stepping stone would gladly join Celtic or Rangers and think they've made it, plenty of prem clubs would gladly have taken high profile ones that joined or stayed despite prem offers like Gazza, Gattuso, Larsson, Moravcik, Klos, Albertz, B.Laudrup, Flo from Chelsea, R.DeBoer, Numan and vanBronckhorst all joined the league, Celtic would've probs signed many more high profile ones too if their financial situation wasn't bad back then... They still signed high profile players like vanHooijdonk Di Canio both very highly regarded before and Thompson at Bolton, who was wanted by most prem teams outside the top 3 or City reject Lennon, Berkovic and Hartson too! Both clubs could've taken most Prem teams star players if they wanted and could afford to outside of dippers Rags and gooners.

Joining either club before the financial ruin of the league was a massive pull for many foreign players... Even lessor players from abroad would feel no way about joining the other clubs for a year or 2 in hopes of bolstering their profile against both Glasgow clubs.

If Fuckbook and Instacunt or twatter was out in the 90s I reckon both would comfortably have at least 15m followers... If 20 years before even double that due to the sectarian shite that surrounded it. Many people around the world watched the old firm derby and saw it amongst the top 5 games to watch in world football.

Scotland is a small country which equates to a small following when you see the internet is extremely casual for most 40+ it's not hard to see why there's such a low following with both clubs failures in close to 20 years... but the SPL used to be one of the most heavily broadcasted league's in the world, when the league faced ruin and both clubs stopped signing elite or high profile players, along with Scotland's low ranking resulting in UCL qualifiers for only one of them, that really sunk the league quicker than Monica Lewinsky at bill Clinton's desk.

How many followers is totally irrelevant Pele and Muhammad Ali would be the most followed sportsmen ever by some distance if all social media was available from the 60s onward... and the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin would all have 10x the followers the likes of Bieber has, instead it wouldn't surprise me if he has more than all combined across all social media platforms.

TL;DR - Two sets of cunts.

I haven't paid any attention to Scottish football really but that's an interesting history.
I don't really think that the numbers of online followers is an indication of much except the number of under 30 year old followers a club has.
All the OP tells me is that Celtic and Rangers are well behind the curve when it comes to their online presence. If they had a more modern marketing department those figures would probably be a lot higher.

Most of the bigger football clubs have about 35-40,000 core supporters who’d be there no matter what. That’s true for United and Liverpool, but also City and Sunderland and probably Celtic and Rangers. Strip away the tourists, glory hunters, corporates and nobodies, you’re left with the proper fans. And they’re the only ones who matter.

You only have to see when the shit hits the fan at any of these clubs to see their attendances to see that:

When Old Trafford had a bomb scare they got about 35k for the replay, and have had many 45k EFL Cup games.
When the Ash Cloud hit and Liverpool were at home about 37k turned up, and when they were struggling under Hodgson they got 35k against Bolton around Christmas.
When we weren’t scoring at home under Pearce our average attendance was 40k, and we averaged 28k in the third tier.
Sunderland beat our third tier record average attendance the other season at around 32k.
Rangers’ average attendance in 2015 was 33k.
Celtic have had it easy winning everything in sight for over a decade but if they fell on hard times, they’d also have around that figure.

Instagram and other social media follower numbers mean absolutely nothing. Most followers of football clubs will be foreigners who follow all the big clubs around Europe, not just one club, they’ll follow the lot. They don’t represent fan numbers or how big a club is. It’s more how popular their league is.

I have an Instagram account but I don’t follow City on there. Their output is aimed at 11 year olds and it’s quite a shit account, as are most sports teams’ accounts. Celtic and Rangers could have thousands of fans like me and thousands of fans who don’t even bother with social media.
