Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

As many have alluded to, the issue is the qualities of the midfield 3 don't perfectly connect with each other.

I think the best way to explain would be our midfield 3 is best when it mirrors Pep' Barca:

1) An Iniesta like player who plays a little bit higher
2) A Xavi like player who has dangerous passing ability, looks forward to control game and can score some goals
3) The more defensive midfielder of the 3

Comparing our players, I think the comparison is that our midfield 3 can only be a combination of:

David/Bernardo------------Kevin/Gundogan
--------------Dinho/Delph

So today we saw both Kevin and Gundogan play, and neither is comfortable playing the Iniesta role, but put one Silva on there instead, then they can play a little deeper to spray passes and rush into the box to score easier because the Silvas are better at controlling the ball near the opposition box.

A small caveat is that Bernardo 'CAN' play with David as the Xavi role, but his final ball is not very good, he tends to make up for it in ball control.

Was average today and the usual suspects on here digging him out , but no worse than the other ten on the field today , he must be nailed on for the" Richard Edghill is useless **** award" for some , i will take the middle ground , he was bought as a squad player and does a decent job when Merlin or Dinho are not available , but he isnt in their class. Some mug on here calling him a pussy , because he doesnt go into crunching tackles maybe should consider his injury record ,and his reluctance to smash another kneecap in, he wasnt signed as a midfield enforcer , and like Pep has previously stated he doesnt coach tackling , the days of Gerry Gow are sadly long gone.

Downhill skier extraordinaire

I would be livid if playing him stunts Foden's development

Average by what standard? He was up against a side who have 11 points all season and who were also missing their best midfielder. If he can’t stand out (in a positive way) against shite like Huddersfield, he might as well call it a day. The quality of our midfield play drops off a cliff whenever he starts.

He was no worse than KDB , Dinho or Merlin when he came on the field , only Laporte , Danilo and Sane played half decent , you could say the same about Mahrez when he replaces Sterling or Sane , the level isnt the same , players like Gundogan and Mahrez are squad players , they will not improve an already brilliant first eleven.

KDB is coming back from a long lay off. Silva came on with the game won. Dinho was bit off his usual standard but maybe having two number 8s continually running away from him didn’t help? Gundogan is only interested in and around the opposition box, he gives us no control whatsoever in the middle of the park.

He just doesnt offer enough for me, in my opinion. As someone has mentioned also, he’s potentially hindering Fodens progress too.

Shows odd glimpses but not enough

He had an excellent game against Cardiff and had a good cameo against Stretford, but today he was average and did not effect the game at all. As other posters have commented Foden needs to be given more opportunities at Gundogan's expense.

Here is a video of Gundogan at Dortmund (quick youtube search) showing his best qualities:

1) Playing the final ball
2) Set piece delivery/crossing
3) Long distance shooting around the edge of the box
4) Pretty good ball control and dribbler also

He is also usually controlled Dortmund's tempo from deeper, and was rarely playing as a 10.

All of these qualities are EXACTLY what Kevin excels in, but Gundogan is asked to play like Silva, those aren't his qualities.

Pep can only play Kevin or Gundogan not both. Too much Gundogan hate for stuff he has no control over, he is being told to play very advanced.
