Ilkay Gundogan - 2018/19 performances

Actually that's not even true at all. I'm trying to figure out where his value is and what he contributes to the team during matches because I legitimately only see his mistakes in matches. Everyone made mistakes in the match but the issue that I'm struggling to figure out are what exactly his positive contributions are.

He's a squad player and a decent footballer...that I'm well aware of.

If I think he's a fucking liability should I not do that and point them out? You living in la la land here where you turn a blind eye to all mistakes and only process the beautiful things that they do? There's two sides to a coin bud.

Just tell me his role is to move the ball as quickly as possible and I'll be done with it. If there's other things that he does that I'm ignorant to then please inform me of them.

Gundo is a complete midfieder. Seems to have lost a bit and whether it is mental or physical, I'm not sure. Reads the game extremely well. Creates space for other players to move in (with his off the ball movement, dragging of defenders). Great touch and awareness. Excellent vision. Has goals in him. A free kick specialist... Think he is made best for a double pivot but still contributing wherever we play him. Let the season run its course. The negative shit gets old. We have no real weaknesses right now.

No difference between a British type cm and Gundogan. Name me one British cm who plays remotely in a similiar fashion to Gundogan. Name me one! Drinkwater, Noble,Gerrard, Henderson, Keane, Dier,
are all typical British cm. I cant make my mind up whether your trying to be clever, or whether you really just haven't haven't got a clue.

He's not a bad player by any stretch, in fact he's clearly a good player, but he's just not as good as the other options we have in his position. I'd much rather see Bernardo moved full time into that 3rd AM/CM spot now that Mahrez can relieve him of his backup RW duty, with Foden as 4th choice. I think he just is the odd man out when we finally get a long term replacement for Fernandinho sorted, I just don't see him as worth playing often enough to keep around. Keeping him around would only eat into Foden's (and potentially Brahim, although that ship seems to be sailing) game time.

So he came in and did what he always does. He movedthe ball as quickly as he possibly could and was a liability in the press and on defense. I paid close attention and he was directly involved in at least two breakaways that were down to him that could have led to chances. The first in his pressing where he took a terrible angle and let the player ghost by him and run uncontested with space for a clear counter in the 79th. The second he passed it to Mahrez in his typical instant style and put him in a bad spot where the ball as stolen from behind and a counter occurred. Thirdly he was easily brushed off in a dual at midfield and a clear run was made. Finally there was a dual near the end at the top of the box where he was easily brushed off. He had a 100% pass succession rate though...

The back 4 were guilty of spilling a fair few more chances to Fulham through poor technique and positional play. In fact it was quite desperate defending at times when defending the break to try and recover the ball. Sane was jogging back on 4 or 5 occasions which let their full back or winger in.Any comments or observations on them lot that contributed far more to us conceding. Didn't think so not unless the name starts with n and ends with s, sorry you probably got your own hone version of var out kadt season to scapegoat Navas at every opportunity last season too. I meant g and n.

It's not pathetic at all. I have an analytical mind and I'm genuinely trying to learn what he does that people rate him for. I want to understand what he contributes and what his role is because it's literally just pass to pass to the guy closest to him and move a yard or two. Is that all?

Yes. That's all he does is make short passes and make himself available quickly again. He doesn't like to hold onto the ball so therefore he doesn't dribble and create like David does around the box. He doesn't have pace or strength so he doesn't try to create space by beating a man. He doesn't have the vision or willingness to play early balls like Kevin does. He doesn't have the defensive attributes or grit to play as a DM. He seems to only like making safe decisions with his passing so how is he effective as a deep lying play maker?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here. He can retain possession and move the ball quickly extremely well though. That might legitimately be all that's needed of him...I have no idea.

It is all that is needed off him. Jorghinio is similar yet slower but everyone was setting the pants trying to get him through the door. Carrick was similar and it's the very reason why united held on to him so long. They still cant and havent replaced him.

This is what I mean i agree but the point I'm trying to make is if a city fan can't understand that Wiltshire or Gundogan don't fall into the category of what coaches across the land have produced and value in cm's, in this country. I give up!. Strength, pace, power and a little technique have been historically and currently preferred qualities in the cm position. This is why most weekends little men like the two Silva's and Gundogan are able to pop the ball around them for fun as the emphasis in these players are in technique and intelligent. Anyone expecting Gundogan to run 30 yards like Delph and put in sliding tackles, dream the fuck on. Not his game. He's in the team to create and more importantly enable the team to retain possession.
