Re: Technical problems

Bluemoon has 519 pages of threads as I write... and the posts it searches must number way over 80,000? Does it need that many? Thats everything since last August. I'm not suggesting that any number of excellent threads (and all the ones which I need to bring back to life in the future to say 'told you so' ;) ) are permanently binned off, but could, say, consign the first 400 pages to some sort of archive where the database is told not to perform the post search?

There are regular calls for a Hall of Fame, for threads of rare excellency, perhaps that could go in there too, as stickies? If you said 'anything older than 2 months' can go in there, and sweep through it once a month or something, you'd keep the number of searches right down and surely the server would go vastly quicker.

I've seen this on the likes of Man City Fans, presumably the guys there would help with an implementation if needs be? They do get this problem occasionally but only when it's gone absolutely stark staring bonkers (ie Sept 1st last year etc) when there are lots of members reading, in addition to hundreds of guests being nosey

Just an idea, like :)

Why don't you introduce a small flood control ?

I've noticed quite a few sql errors both today and yeterday .

A flood control might irritate members at first , but they'll adapt to it , and it will solve a lot of bandwidth problems .

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.phpbb.com/search/?q=flood+control" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.phpbb.com/search/?q=flood+control</a>

What errors? Can you copy/paste them here?

There are two ways of fixing the problems: cut down on functionality/data/annoy users or working out root causes of problems. We work hard, so you don't have the inconvieiences of losing old posts, or flood controllers.

When you say ' we ' work hard , may I presume you are an admin ?
If you are , most errors will show up in your database if you have the chance to check . I don't have copies of the errors , but if I think on , I'll try and get one if the problem persists .

As for flood controllers , yes , they are an inconvenience , but not nearly as inconvenience as a forum going down . They are essential for busy forums , and are a cheaper option than a huge server upgrade .

If members log out when they leave , it can also help too .
