In your opinion who's a better player....

gerrard is amazing but liverpool ran him into the ground, end of!

he gave all but there was too many journey men with them for too many years.

pirlo is a class act and is like a fine wine (laced with uncut colombian), amazing the last few years!

stevie by a nostril hair imo..... for being an all rounder!!!

EDIT: good point about pirlo controlling game at international level, stevie could have done this if he was not run into the ground by his club. they rushed him back from injuries all his career-i said it 5 years ago "liverpool are killing him"

Bloody hell, I'm amazed at the flak Gerrard has received off some people here.

Yes, Pirlo has looked good for Italy, and the way he plays the game means he doesn't sprint here, there and everywhere like Gerrard still (tries) to do, so he will probably age a lot better.

Pirlo will still be able to do what he always has done when he's 37, Gerrard wont.

However, over the course of their careers, IMO, Gerrard by quite a bit.

He was an incredible box to box midfielder. Fantastic captain, tackler, passer both short and long, could strike a ball as good as anyone from all ranges, and was also a great finisher.

He's carried Liverpool on more than one occasion and when I used to watch him in his prime, he was my favourite CM in England. I loved the way he played. Yes, now and again he tried the odd one to many Hollywood balls, but that's because he could.

He scored so many important goals for his club, West Ham in the Cup Final, Olympiakos in the CL Groups and of course the header against Milan.

Don't get me wrong, Pirlo has always been a classy player and if you asked me who I'd want in my 4-5-1 team right now I'd say Pirlo.

However, if you asked me in any season between 2003-2009, whether it be 442 or 451, Gerrard absolutely hands down.

Would love to hear some Italian opinions.

Here I am :D .
This is not an easy question, btw I think that Pirlo was really understimate throught years, maybe because Italian serie a in the last years have lost some visibility.
But he is brilliant, clever, pure class player... one of the best midfielder ever.
Two years ago he got injuried and that's why he did not played at his standards.
On the other side, Gerrard is a nice all-round player, I love it... but at the end of the day, I would like to have Pirlo in my team rather than Gerrard.
Because Pirlo can really change a team alone, can turn your the cards in the table more than Gerrad.
That's my opinion, sorry for english mistakes :D

A couple of spelling mistakes but I could certainly understand your point.

I have to confess I haven't seen enough of Pirlo over the years so can't make a direct comparison. But Gerrard in his peak years was an absolute beast of a player and is one of the best midfielders I've seen live.

Got to be Pirlo, makes everything look so easy. Never seen Gerrard control the pace of a game and everything seems as if it has to be played at a fast tempo when Gerrards on form. Too many "killer" passes tried too instead of simple pass and go although that could be more to do with the England team around him. He seemed a much better player when Alonso was playing alongside him for Liverpool.

Had the privelage of watching Pirlo play against Benfica or Milan in the CL a couple of seasons ago and he was sublime...

Pirlo by a whisker for me, as many have pointed out it's hard to say how Stevie G may have shone had he had better players with him...Pirlo definately wins on the medals front!

Pirlo and it's not even close.

Unbelievably, I've had people ask me where he's come from all of a sudden...

people are too quick to disregard Gerrard just because he's scouse etc, but tbf they dont have the same style, have different roles even though are both centre mids, Pirlo is a deep lying playmaker, one of the best, Gerrard is a box to box powerhouse.

The better question would have been Pirlo or Scholes

The reasons you point here seem to reinforce the fact that Gerrard is not a technical player nor is he tactically intelligent.

Gerrard should have never stayed at Liverpool once the opportunity to move to a better team came. He stayed loyal at the detriment of his footballing career.

And no Gerrard has never been better than Pirlo. You know that Pirlo was even better when he was at Milan right?
