Horrific, remember this like it was Yesterday, they are still not sure of how many people died but it is estimated a quarter of a million perished, such was the power of the surge they were simply washed away and never seen again
The whole region is still recovering 10 years on but hopefully with the new early warning systems in place it will never happen again

Remember a video shot by I think it was a Swedish family on the beach, some of them were filming their family members being swept away, they never found their bodies
 
Watching the documentary now on ITV. Hard to believe it’s 20 years ago. Absolutely horrific. The stories are unimaginable.

There was an ITV News reporter (I think) caught up in it who's testimony was the most graphic at the time
