A three week tournament is irrelevant in the cold light of day when it comes down to taking care of your long term career.

If he were to go against his club's wishes and NOT have the op, goes to the WC and is injured yet again, I would imagine he will be gone from this club before the new year.

If I was a player it wouldn't be irrelevant, I'd be absolutely gutted to have to make that decision. It might take care of your long term career but to have the opportunity to play in a World Cup, particularly for a team that has a chance (although it might be slim based on past attempts) that's a big decision. He might go on to have a bang average career and that WC would be his defining moment. I'm sure City were hoping to manage him through to the WC and beyond and try and avoid an op but it's just too big a problem unfortunately. I can't see City forcing it upon him though, Pep's always respectful of International duty and what it means to players even if I'm sure he'd prefer life without those interruptions.

A WC is no longer the pinnacle it once was, I would bet that if Phillips was truthful, playing for us in a Champions league final at the end of the season would mean more to him, even more so with the crazy location and timing of the WC.

Again I'd disagree. I think the CL and World Cup are probably regarded as equal to the majority of players but for an English player I'd be surprised if winning the CL was higher on their wishlist than winning a major tournament with England. Regardless, it is what it is and hopefully he gets the issue sorted and is back soon. Timing wise it is for our benefit and whilst England will miss him, he clearly wouldn't have been able to perform at the WC and it forces Southgate to think about playing Bellingham alongside Rice and having a bit more of a forward thinking combination.

I hate these meaningless International breaks, last thing City needed was another injured defender. Hope Walker doesn’t pick up a knock. Meanwhile most Liverpool players are having an early season break.

That's Stones not playing again now until the world cup where he can pick up another international injury. Any news on Ake, down to the bare bones in defence now, shows you just how crucial that 5th cb signing was, and to think, people were genuinely suggesting we only needed 3 again this summer.
