After reading the Bitcoin thread and for those wanting to invest money, where or what is going to be the next big thing?

I've seen recently quite a few write ups on medical marijuana and that this will become a huge industry.

Also if someone was wanting to invest, where would they go about doing so?

Really hoping this thread becomes interesting but helps a lot of people.

Other than genuine crypto currencies/block chain technology, a serious answer would be data analytics, automation and API's.

Bitcoin was never an investment, Bitcoin was akin to sticking your savings on red in a game of roulette where the odds constantly change and the casino doesn't payout. Investments should be tangible and Bitcoin is only as tangible as the amount someone else is prepared to pay and not the value the market says it is worth. The increase in value has been purely down to less availability and that indicates that no-one is selling...

You will notice that the amount of paper Bitcoin millionaires is large but the amount of those who have actually cashed in at those amounts is extremely small. All it takes is for those people to dump it to some morons and it will drop like a rock.

It is still the daddy and helped create better technology via alt coins, will change the face of the earth so fair play to everyone that helped invest in it.

Not getting into crypto is like people not using the internet, eventually you will it is here to stay.

Had an interesting chat with an old school mate the other day over dinner. He's investing in two things.

1. Property. He's doing small, cheap buy to lets in the north east/northumberland. 30 to 35k apparently gets a two bed terrace, his developer chap does a 10-15k refurb and they're getting 500 pcm return with sign ups queuing to get them. His view is investing with an eye on income, rather than capital growth will help him through retirement.

2. A.I - artificial intelligence start ups. He's put some cash in to a couple of these and has some really exciting/worrying views on where this will be in the next 10 years.

I'm going to put all my spare cash in to the weekly shop, though suspect it won't be much of an investment.

Property for me. As York's old school mate is doing. Buy in a cheap area, then do up and let out. A guaranteed return in rent and the property price goes up. Slowly admittedly but it still goes up. I'm not doing it for a quick buck but aiming for more long term.

Downsides? Buying cheap and letting out for similar does lead to some less than house proud tenants but with the right agent this can be negated. Insurance costs. Agency fees.

Vital to have a decent agent especially with the distances involved. You can't just pop up to check.

Low cost index funds.

Everyone wants to beat the market or find the next big thing. Very few do.
