I just found my IP address on my router software. I googled it and it says I am in the USA!! Has Charlestown moved? (Blackley M9)

Your router will only give you a private IP address mate. You would have googled a private IP.

Public IP's are location specific. Go to www.whatismyip.com when your on tinterweb and you'll get a public IP which you can trace to your geographical location.

Did that and it says I am in the Yorkshire dales!!! Near Skipton lol

Tried again and it says Carphone warehouse broadband services Oxford.

How do mods on here know where peoples IP addresses are and what does mine say?

The forum records the IP address of every post. According to my program, you're just off Rochdale Road.

for me, it depends on whether i am "in work" or not

work 1 - i am on a network in Southport
work 2 - i am physically at home but connected to work via VPN through Nottingham
work 3 - actually at home in sunny Warrington

not sure what would be recorded on here though!

Your ip address is probably assigned as a dhcp address which means every now and then it might be assigned to somebody else and you get a new address.

Because of the shortage of IPv4 addresses left, a lot of internet providers don't give you a static ip anymore.
