Can the new version of firestick still be used for watching live sport, movies etc. I heard there's something on the stick stopping you loading the illegal stuff on?

Whilst the firestick is easy to use and more importantly for me take away on holiday, I would look at a box instead. I don't think the pressure on Amazon is going to subside so maybe better to move away now.

I moved last week. Bought two Dcolor GD2 boxes. Much quicker and flawless in operation. Wish I had done this moons ago

I've not had a stick for years, use a Nvidia Shield in the living room and a google streamer 4k in another room.
I'm similar to you. Shield on main TV and a stick for travel. Trouble is I managed to lose the stick remote on holiday and using the Fire App on the phone is a pain when the WiFI is in and out, as it was. And when you move to a place where the stick has no Wifi already on it, it's impossible to connect it up using the phone app as the phone and stick have to be on the same network.

You can buy replacement remotes - lad lost his and I had to buy one, was about £6

Our 4k Firestick is still fine and, as you say, great for travel. Ended up retiring a Shield for a Homatics because the missing codecs were becoming an issue yet no issues so far with the Firestick. The boxes aren't too big but still take up more space than a Firestick in your bag

I know but we only had a week to go and Thailand isn't the easiest to get a quick replacement. The reason I didn't take the box is that it can't be powered from a USB on the TV which can be useful sometimes.

You could probably have got one there and saved it the trip to the UK ;-)

The USB is useful as smaller plug and have doubled it up to charge Kindle etc. Could do with it being on USB C these days

If your on the fire stick there is less options now and eventual all not working
Yes, my fire stick simply identified the cinema hd equivalents and stopped their operation.
My solution was to replace the fire stick which frankly had a shortage of storage so later versions of chips and software types make for better viewing when side loaded.
