Iran shipping conflict

It's a shame how Iran was ruined by ayatollah Khomeini. It used to look like a cosmopolitan, European city prior to him seizing power.

The problems with Iran stem further back than the revolution , the royal family were wankers tbf and British and CIA interference with the democratically elected government of mossagdegh and coup that reinstalled the shah ultimately led to the religious extremist gaining a platform and cause to rally people behind against the government.

If the US and us had just left Iran alone after the war, a secular and tollerant ally may be what we have now.

Also this shit kicks off everytime extreme sanctions are applied, and history shows that that tactic doesn't work.

The carrot has seen progress and more peaceful periods in regions.
The stick has seen continued escalation and us going round in circles

Good post mate. Historically the U.K. has proper f**ked Iran and it is no wonder that they do not look on us as friends. Trumps trashing of the Nuclear agreement meant that this is inevitable. Good job we have such a strong Navy to protect our ships.... oh wait :-(

Might as well go for the win, let’s carpet bomb Tehran.

We don’t have the military capabilty to take any action nor do we have the Navy assets to provide escort protection for cargo ships. Our only way out is a diplomatic solution.

To put into perspective we have less than 20 frigates & destroyers to call upon. At the time of the Falklands crisis we would have had around 75. The erosion of our conventional forces has been a constant for decades.

That post was a joke.

What did the UK Government think would happen when they cut Defence spending?

I've no idea as its nonsense although i fear what our spending and armed forces would be reduced to under a Labour government led by Corbyn.

That isn't whataboutery either, its a genuine concern given his well known stance.

The UK has to plan for the future and spend accordingly to meet threats and be able to react.

The 2 carriers once fully commissioned and equipped with jets will be a huge boost but for carriers to be effective, they need the support ships and im not just talking the Merchant navy in tow either.

The trouble is, it is not like you or I deciding to sped a few more quid on a car. We could do that tomorrow in regards cars, houses etc. - We are talking about warships, staff, training, etc. It takes years to design, build and staff these things

Maybe we should join that EU Army after all.......;-)
