Is there any danger of us losing our 4th CL spot ?

Home or work, well mostly home these days.
With all our clubs out of the CL next week (barring a miracle for Arsenal obviously) is there a danger we could lose a place ? I suspect not this year, but if we had a similar performance next year is the risk there ?

Only 3 countries get 4 clubs, and we are currently 2nd ahead of Germany, but Germany who still have 3 in there may overtake us. Italy are the next threat, and they still have 2 in, but are quite a bit behind.

How many bad seasons can we afford before we risk losing a place ? Any experts on the maths ?

It's a 5 year rolling isn't it, I heard on the radio last night we would have to do this badly, as a country for the next 3 or 4 years to lose it. It helps we have had finalists in 7 of the last 8 CL years.

It would be funny as fuck if our poor European performances lost the 4th place to the detriment of Spurs/Arsenal/Liverpool.

We have much more to fear from French football overtaking us than Italian imo.

That said, the Premier League is still a top league and the new TV deal should see off any nascent threat to its four CL places from the Continent.

We're fourth in the season coefficients at the moment which, if it persisted over the next few years, could mean we'd lose a spot. But there is no imminent danger. Will we lose a Europa spot if Germany overtakes us?

there is a danger of germany overtaking england, but no way Engalnd slipping behind italy the next 4 or 5 years. And don´t forget: it´s both european cups, that count. And there are still 3 english clubs in the Europa League with only one german

Italy are currently the biggest threat, France while 5th are currently a long way back on Italy, and will only have PSG to rely on to increase their points in at least the short term.

It will be interesting to see if the new TV deal has any impact, so far our wealth hasn't helped much, so its not just about money.

-- Thu Mar 07, 2013 4:54 pm --

I hadn't really looked at the Europe League, so hadn't checked out your performance there, thanks.

no, you see it in that list: 7 clubs for the first three nations

I wouldn't say they were a long way back and I reckon they'll overtake Italy in the next couple of seasons and become an increasing threat. That's the point I was (poorly) trying to make.

I will start accepting that the Premier League is seriously falling behind if Germany widens that gap in the next couple of years, but these things can be pretty fluid and them overtaking us, as long as we stay within striking distance, doesn't really bother me, especially given the fact that we get the same number of CL places in 2nd or 3rd.

Why Liverpool?

They aren't getting a Champions League place again in my lifetime.
