Me and mrs 2sheikhs have had a joint account for years. However, after so many arguments about money, I decided to open my own account and just give her money to cover the bills etc, every week. The bank wrote to her stating in the letter, "as you are probably aware, your husband has opened a new current account but still has access to the funds in your joint account". They then went on about it being an opportunity to try online banking. Are they allowed to divulge personal information like this?

What's mrs2sheikh's beef? As long as you're paying your share of the bills there's no problem. We have our own accounts and an account for the bills that we pay half of the bills in each, each month. My folks only ever had one account, and I could never see how that worked, or the point of it.
Not sure about the bank being able to divulge the info to your mrs, but I would say they are just trying to sell a product and inviting her to have one too.

You have to reveal you assets to your partners lawyer even if you are divorcing so they have not broken any laws. It is probably done to protect people from stealing partners the bank is looking out for number one of course.

Usually though if a divorce or separation is occurring and the bank have been made aware the accounts are amended from one to sign to both to sign (so if any withdrawals are made both parties must be present) and all cards, cheque books etc are cancelled.

Don't think they are able to do this. I would go to the bank and kick right off about this. You may have wanted to open a further account to save for something as a surprise for Mrs 2sheiks... which is now scuppered. I think they can share information with other financial agencies. Would they have done the same if your joint account was a business account with another signature? I doubt it. Think they are out of order there.

They have no business whatsoever revealing anything to anyone else about your accounts, I would seriously consider taking legal advice on this, it sounds more like a marketing tool than one to protect people anyway..

I had a strange thing, kinda related. Me and my ex have a joint account, her little keypad thingy broke so she requested a new one a couple of weeks ago, and they addressed it to me. Mine was in perfect working order, and I have access to several accounts with this bank, she only has the one account. Why would they address her replacement keypad to me?
