Transfer Tavern

‘And go he will’.

Curiously not the words of Yoda, but those of the Tavern’s snitch. Not any old snitch but one who treads the deepest and often darkest carpeted corridors of Eastlands.

The news that Mancini isn’t a long term appointment isn’t earth shattering news. The fact that he was never approached, intended or ever thought as one is our first clue, the second has been the, shall we call them, ‘interpersonal issues’ between the manager and some of the playing staff. The last is that Frank Rijkaard is already lined up as his replacement.

The speculation has been rife, naturally. Jose Mourinho’s ‘plan’ to get everyone talking about him as gone up like a touch paper, but it will not be him. Crazy, loose talk of Capello and Benitez even has been doing the rounds.

Rijkaard will be part of a philosophy that was attempted under Hughes, but suspended when Hughes was found wanting. To this end incidentally, if you think City have been flashing the cash so far, just you wait and see what’s a comin’ Mamma. Some twenty odd players have been seriously scouted, some targets identified by Mancini himself, even though he knows he shall never manage them in a City shirt.

The good news is that the ‘King Makers’ at Eastlands want stability as ultimately they grasp that this, combined with all the other fun stuff, brings success.

Frank Rijkaard, only 47, has a record that is impressive. As has his maturing as both a man as and as a manager. His CV at this stage has him as an almost impossibly perfect fit for the role at City. He crucially has the form as well as the attacking, intelligent, commercial and so very watchable type of football that Manchester Cit so very much wish to be associated with.

Good luck to them.

AHHHHH!!!!!! Don't know, for a change, what to say about all this malarky, apart from bollox?!

Rijkaard always becomes City manager when Hughes gets sacked on FM2010, :/

rijkaard was recently linked to the aussie job, and juventus. his agent was whoring him around last year, expressed an interest in our job, chelsea, ac milan, but he ended up at gala.

here's a potted history of his coaching record. semi's of the european finals as dutch manager (remember their 6-1 against yugoslavia?), lost on penalties to italy. joined sparta rotterdam and got relegated. presided over a bad start at barca, before winning the title twice, and a european cup (beating arsenal in teh champs league final, remember that?). pipped to the title a year later, drawing 1-1 at a shit betis side on the last day. then it really started to go horribly horribly wrong. finished 15 points of the title. stars completely out of control. sacked.

guardiola has a 78% win record at barca. rijkaard managed 54%.

he does know a thing or two about attacking football mind you. but he's not exactly set the world on fire at gala. they are third, having splashed out quite heavily. what strikes me is the large number of games his teams lose, considering they are expected to be title challengers. 9 league losses is a lot for either barca or gala. I think he needs to build his reputation a bit before I'd consider him a top candidate for this job.

The story has been lifted off BMC's post. One of the threads TH posted, it's almost word for word ......lazy journo bast*rds!

To be fair though Messi and Iniesta were both really only beginning to perform well in Rikjaards term there. They have started to hit there peak under Guardiola which has helped considerably.

oh no doubt. and rijkaard had inherited a mess. it does seem to me tho that he left one too, he'd totally lost control by the end, there were big problems and they got rid of loads of players. but they did have an incredible core to rebuild around. still, I can't help but think that these were all kids that guardiola had been working with for years behind the scenes. and rijkaard did have Ronaldinho at his peak.

now there are people will tell you that mancini was sacked for losing control at inter, but there is no way on earth it was as bad as rijkaards last year at barca. having read everything I can find on the subject and talked to a few of their fans, I believe whilst Mancini did have problems in his final season (for one thing, he dropped a major bollock in the liverpool game, and stupidly offered to resign immediately after), him leaving came down to Moratti's obsession with the champions league, and mourinho becoming available.

the proof of this for me is he won the title anyway, where as rijkaard's barca were 3rd, miles off the pace. and in his first season mourinho barely changed a thing from the team that he took over from mancini. what he did change didn't work at all, and it wasn't until this summer that he actually rebuilt. whereas there was no way that rijkaard could have continued IMO, they had to sell armfuls of players who were seriously acting up or underperforming, and that had happened on his watch. maybe he's older and wiser now but I'm not convinced by third in the turkish league league, and I do find the reports of Jo rivalling Ronaldinho in the party-animal stakes concerning.

what I will concede is that rijkaard's teams have played some absolutely fantastic attacking football. that 6-1 over yugoslavia was something else, and ronaldinho was the most creative player in the world under rijkaard. his barca did win major honours in fantastic style.

And that would be one of the reasons why I would absolutely hate it if that **** was to become City's manager. Besides I think he is not a good manager anyway.
