Booked flights to and from Athens that covers the European Cup final should we get there. Plan is to just have a holiday for 2 weeks if we don't and if we do, we'll still be having a holiday, just after we've lifted the European Cup in Istanbul.

Have any bluemooners been to any of the islands? Hydra, Poros, Kythnos or Agistri all look nice.

We're a couple in our early 40's. Not after nightlife, more a relaxing place with nice sand beaches and a decent amount of restaurants. We also enjoy rambling/hiking so somewhere we can do that would be preferable.

Crete also doesn't seem too far away so any recommendations for where to go in Crete might also be useful.

Cheers blues

If you go to Hydra the only means of transport is donkey. There are no cars.

Crete may look close on the map, but it is an 8 to 11 hour ferry journey, though obviously flying is much quicker. British visitors have tended to gravitate to the east of the island, in places such as Ayios Nikolaos, or remained in the area around Iraklion, but the more beautiful part of the island is arguably in the west around Chania. From there, it is possible to climb into the mountains and traverse the Samaria Gorge, if then open.

Thanks mate. Not against jumping on a plane and settling in Crete.

Our original thoughts however were to base ourselves on one if the islands around 2 hours ferry trip away from Athens. That way we thought we'd be able to see a bit of Athens whilst there.

I suppose where Crete comes into the equation is that many holiday makers go to the island so it'd maybe have a bit more to offer than the smaller ones mentioned in my original post. The mountainous part of Crete does look nice too.

I definitely don't want to be in a resort that has a Nobbys Bar with other Nobbys in there with their football bantz.

We were on Ithaka in May one year and it was very quiet. Don't expect much to be open on a small island that time of year.
If it was me, I'd hire a car and head toward the North East, aim for Corfu of Kefalonia. Stop on the way. That way you get to see a lot of it and if its too quiet you could just move on.
