It’s Quiet 20 - What is the Wirtz that could happen?

Whilst much has been made of our porous midfield, it's also true that not having proper fullbacks is causing us no end of grief.

In our pomp, where keeping possession was all so easy, playing 3 centre backs with one moving into midfield was just fine.

Now however with our rivals bristling with power and intent, those wide open areas are being exploited.

On the left Ake being injured a lot is not helping whilst on the right Walker's demise is well documented.

Neither Lewis or Nuñes are fit for purpose in these positions.

It often seems forgotten that there is a bit more to winnign football games (or even not losing them from winning positions) than just which players a director of football assembles.

We could still lose games if Luiz or another comes, it is not entirely simply victory by formula.

Teams with better midfielders than ours lose games and some with worse players win them. It happens.

By all means I want us to address it, don't get me wrong. But we still have to find ways to win or hang onto leads, and this group should have it in them to do that.
Fully agree. We definitely need a couple of top class central midfielders but there is still a mentality problem. Time and again we are good enough to take a lead only to crumble.

If Diaz and Rodri are in last night’s team and 2-0 up we don’t lose.

Your post starts with the precise opposite of the truth and builds on it. The recruitment of the right players for the right positions determines success - ask Pep.

We got utterly steamrollered last night by a younger high energy team, and I stick unfortunately to my prediction that we will get trounced embarrassingly by one of the big teams we play over the next few weeks unless we make a couple of midfield additions before the window shuts.
Agreed. It could get very ugly in the upcoming difficult run of fixtures unless we sign a minimum of 2 midfielders, both of whom can hit the ground running.

I

don’t get how people just don’t seem to be able to understand,we obviously can’t get our midfield targets in this window and it would be madness to miss out on those players to bring in panic buys now. Just repeating mistakes we made with Phillips and to a lesser degree Nunes. It isn’t perfect but missing whoever we want long term for short term gain would be a bigger mistake.
If we don't end up getting Championship League Football for next season it will be an even bigger hit financially on top of trying to attract top players will be a bigger hit than not stumping up in this transfer window.

Does he not kind of have to? Otherwise, there goes a chunk of his clicks. Imagine if he said, yeah that's it no more all done - with 12 days of the window left for followers to check his page.
I think the meltdown from City fans on his tweet would more than make up for it

Fabrizio saying 'we're not done yet...at all.'
God...its gonna be another centre back isn't it ....

Please give us a midfielder, fuck it even if it's just Douglas Luiz

Can't just keep getting overrun and relying on old men who are exhausted and stuck in the mud

I said before the window I woukd have been surprised by 2 never mind 3 signings this window. I think if any more do come, it might be late in the window approaching or on deadline day. Once Walker has left we maybe start hearing more.

Not convinced we are that in for Cambiaso and Luiz, ot is beginning to feel more like Italian paper gossip running away with itself a bit. But who knows. Not really been linked with anyone else beyond that.

Dw people get it, jsut can't fathom how we can't identify "anyone" who we think could come in and do a job and/or be the long term option

The Rodri back-up isn't something that's new, they can't have jsut thought about it after his injury

There are players out there, there has to be, that could at least steady the ship and help a sinking ship

We had 4months to identity targets after Rodri ACL and here we are, on the cusp of missing out on top 4 and about to leave the champions league in then group stage

There has to be someone, even if it's an expensive loan move for someone who isnt a priorty target, we have the money
