I don't think Spurs will sell Toby for £40m. First reason is they might feel they could convince him to sign a contract by next summer. Secondly £17m isn't very much for them to lose possibly the best CB in the league. He could be the difference between them winning and losing the title for £17m.
It's this summer or bust.
They are confident of securing a deal but even a premium £17m is big money.
As it is, £40m was just my ballpark example.
£50m? £60m, at some point Levy must reconcile that against losing him next year for £23m if he does not sign.
Keeping hold of him but not increasing his wages also does not make for a happy player.
This is Spurs' constant problem. Kane is earning £110k a week!!
