It's Quiet the £250m return

Agreed. Do you. Thi
By the same rule, it isn’t “cult member” behaviour it or “not allowing anyone to criticize Pep” if I point out that we have only two defeats in the last 21 matches. And one of those was a fiddle.

We finished third in the premier league on merit not thirteenth in league one. Even in an off year we are still the third best team in the country.

Agreed on all of that...do you think we played anywhere near our level last year hor any prolonged period of time? Regardless of results....did we see tge team perform at it's best? I don't think we were anywhere near previous years levels and therefore think we gaveca lot of improvement to make based on other teams probably will improve as well.

If Rodri is available and performs at his pre injury level amd if Foden performs how we know he can thenwe will be there or there abouts......however if either don't throw I think at present we will be behind the scousers and possibly Arsenal

Please don't tell me that we paid 80m for him? I thought its was more like 50

Don’t worry mate - we paid £50m for him.

But that figure has a tendency to drift upwards whenever a poster intends to share their view on what a waste of money he was, or what a terrible decision it was to sign him.

Which was the point I was attempting to parody!

True but should we sell/loan Gonzalez and then Rodri gets injured it’s back to square one. No back-up specialist DM.

Who *does* have a backup specialist DM of real quality?

Liverpool have Gravenberch and MacAllister - neither are proper #6s, in fact MacAllister is like Reijnders where he can play all 3 midfield roles.

Real have...Tchouameni and Camavinga who's a utility player not a specialist.

PSG have Vitinha and Neves who are more high pressing runners than proper defensive midfielders next to Zaire-Emery.

Arsenal have Rice and Norgaard who isn’t a player our fan base coveted before the move.

I think we’ve got more than enough players who can do the job well if/when Rodri isn’t playing.

But we don't, and that is the primary reason we struggled this year.

Simon is a blue. Just happens to be the biggest flapper on here. His M.O.
Blue but no flapper...I actually don't care as much as some clearly do on here so quite the opposite to a flapper...like I said..its just a game..22 players kicking a ball around on grass is nothing to get as wound up as some people do about differing opinions.

What a shambles of a last 2 years. There should have been a major reset after the treble. Instead 300m wasted as one man goes on an ego trip . But sure we were division 1 a short time ago .

Shambles, fucking lol.

We won the league the year after the treble. I'd be amazed if you're actually a City fan.

Your post has been liked by all the people I've already blocked for being the biggest negative trolls on here.

Wouldn't be in the slightest bit surprised to see a midfield 3 of Gundogan, Bernardo and Kovacic start first game of the season.

We have technically got 18 midfielders on the cards, but you're right that'll probably be the starting line up for us :)

More like up to the age of 21 not 22 since Wirtz season being 22 hasn’t even started yet.

Phil Foden made his professional debut for Manchester City in 2017 at the age of 17, but for much of his early career, he was eased into the first team as a rotation option under Pep Guardiola. While this allowed him to learn in an elite environment, it also meant limited game time and relatively low responsibility in the early years. From 17 to around 20, Foden often featured off the bench and was surrounded by some of the best players in the world, which naturally made it easier to shine in certain moments without carrying the full creative burden.

In contrast, Florian Wirtz broke into Bayer Leverkusen’s first team in 2020 at just 17 years old and immediately became a starter. Unlike Foden, Wirtz was given a central role from the beginning — tasked with driving the attack, creating chances, and often acting as the team’s key playmaker. His influence was not only consistent but crucial, and he took on far more responsibility for his team’s offensive output than most players his age.

From a statistical point of view, Wirtz was remarkably productive. Despite suffering a serious ACL injury in 2022, he still managed to reach over 60 goal contributions (goals + assists) before the age of 21. In the 2023/24 season, just before turning 21, he played a leading role in Leverkusen’s historic campaign, helping the club win both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal while going unbeaten in the league also while being their best player. Which other 21 yr old did that in the Bundesliga? Only one who came close was Götze back then who was compared to Neymar and even then Dortmund didn’t go unbeaten.

Wirtz individual accomplishments

  • Fritz-Walter Medal Gold (U17 in 2020, U19 in 2022)
  • Bundesliga Rookie of the Year (2020/21)
  • Bundesliga Team of the Season (multiple times)
  • Europa League Young Player of the Season (2022/23)

Foden also achieved major success, especially in terms of team trophies. Between 17 and 21, he won multiple Premier League titles, League Cups, and an FA Cup with Manchester City. He was named PFA Young Player of the Year twice (2020/21 and 2021/22) and Premier League Young Player of the Season twice as well. These are impressive honors too difference is the team they both played for. Not saying making the first team at the age of 17 isn’t impressive but there’s a difference between turning an team completely over in that age group then being a part of it while mostly sitting on the bench. We are talking about individual stuff not what the team has done.

To put it simply: Foden played for the best team in the league — and won accordingly. Wirtz played for a strong team — but made them elite. He was the focal point of Leverkusen’s success. For me it’s like saying Vinicius is better then Neymar because he won more - yet no one will actually believe that. Obviously the Neymar to Vinicius comparison is dumb since Neymar is easily top 5 most talented offensive players of all time but still you get the memo?
Between the ages of 17-21 Wirtz had more impact for his team.
And that’s where Wirtz currently is. He hasn’t had a season since turning 22.

You say Foden played for the best team in the league. Correct. That’s because he was good enough to get in it. Palmer, for example, wasn’t. So, by your argument it was easier to get into Leverkusen’s team.
Also, as I recall, Phil had the odd achievement at under age international level, on a team and personal level, but let’s forget that eh?

I genuinely can't see that
If he's not going to play he should have been shown the door like Kev or told to find a new club like Grealish. It beggars belief we are supposedly considering keeping gundogan over a player we signed for £60m 5 months ago.

Just further highlights the non existent squad planning and poor transfer strategy at the club since winning the treble, theres obviously a disconnect between Pep and those above him. Circa £400m spent excluding this summer and we're still over-reliant on the same players.
